In next week’s episodes of Emmerdale, life for struggling pensioner Edna Birch (Shirley Stelfox) and harassed mum Lisa Dingle (Jane Cox) is set to get a whole lot worse…

Starting with Edna’s plight, she has of course secretly been under a lot of financial pressure while paying for her beloved dog Tootsie’s cancer treatment, and has even starved herself to make sure Tootsie can eat.

However, her health has been suffering – as she’s not been putting her heating on – and that’s compounded by the fact that there’s damp in her house.

But there’s worse to come when Edna learns that it’s going to cost £4,000 to repair her roof. And in the episode that airs on Friday, February 22nd, we’ll see Edna suffering further humiliation when her credit card is declined at the vet’s…

All the upset prompts Edna to take refuge in the church, but while there, she breaks down in tears. But will her pride allow her to tell someone about her plight?

On now to Lisa’s troubles with Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper) and as we’ve seen in the last couple of weeks, the teenager has been making her mum and dad frantic, what with her dating boys and generally trying to act like an adult…

But next week, the final straw for Lisa comes when she finds pictures on Belle’s phone of the teen provocatively dressed in skimpy clothes and slathered in make-up.

Lisa immediately grounds Belle, and confiscates her phone, but the minute her mum’s back’s turned, Belle sneaks out of the house to hook up with her mate Gemma, who in turn takes Belle to hang out with Thomas and Sean.

So by the time we get to the episode that airs on Friday, February 22nd, Belle’s in a world of trouble with Lisa, however, much to Lisa’s fury, the scheming teen has her dad Zak (Steve Halliwell) wrapped round her little finger, and he even gives her her phone back!

Poor Lisa! She’s fighting a losing battle there isn’t she?

Here’s a sneak peek look at this week’s Emmerdale action…

I hope that the script writers realize that the plight of Edna Birch will be closely followed by a mirriad of seriously financially embarrassed pensioners throughout the country! I hope so!
Many retired people who have hitherto been reasonably well off until the last few years and the ever dwindling interest rates on their savings, are now in such dire straits, that they believe there is only way out – for themselves and their beloved pet.
Think carefully, script writers. A tragic end for Edna could result in some sad and distressing consequences for many lonely folk who have only their loving pet for company. A happy ending – well … it COULD give hope to everyone
