In the first of a double-bill of episodes of Emmerdale that air on Thursday 2nd January, Sam’s panic-stricken when the police arrest him on suspicion of arson with intent.
Rachel is unaware of Sam’s arrest until Jai relays the news, and when Zak and Lisa take her to the police station, she insists it wasn’t him.
Under questioning, Sam admits to arguing with Megan, then realises he’s given the police motive. Sam’s then shown CCTV evidence that clearly shows him going inside Home Farm before the fire, and his heart sinks with dismay. Things don’t look good.
Elsewhere, Moira’s foot isn’t getting any better, and neither is the tension between Cain and the Barton boys…
Later, when James finds Moira in agony, he persuades her to let him take her to hospital, but when Cain arrives at A&E, he’s not happy to see James and gives him his marching orders. When she returns from getting treatment, Moira’s surprised but happy to see Cain waiting for her instead of James.
Back in the village, as the police continue to question the villagers about the fire, Declan worries about the investigation being slow…
He and Charity put on a good show on for Debbie over Sam’s arrest, but once she leaves, they share a moment of relief that their plan is working.
Soon, the police quiz Diane and Bernice about the argument Sam and Megan had, and it seems that the finger of suspicion is well and truly pointed at Sam.
Also, Debbie’s unimpressed to learn that Cain has given Ross his job back, and later, she flips out at Ross.
And finally, Ruby tells Ali she may be pregnant, and Val gets a new chambermaid – Finn!
In the second episode, under questioning, Sam tries to explain why he lied about returning to Home Farm…
Meanwhile, the police are at the Dingles to search for evidence, and later, in an attempt to cover for Rachel, Sam lies about it being his idea to steal from Declan, and admits to knocking coal onto the floor.
The police don’t seem to believe his version of events, and though Charity has a flicker of guilt about Sam, she soon refocuses as she and Declan begin to worry their plan is falling apart when DS Reed admits the evidence against Sam is circumstantial.
Elsewhere, Ali is on tenterhooks waiting for Ruby to do the pregnancy test, but the pair are over the moon at the positive result, and discuss who to tell first.
Also, Cain gives Ross an official warning, which Ross shrugs off as he stares at Debbie inscrutably. However, Debbie reassures Cain that she can handle Ross.
