Emmerdale star Pauline Quirke reveals she had to take notice of “wake up calls” about her weight

Pauline Quirke, who of course stars in Emmerdale as Hazel Rhodes, has revealed that she decided she has to lose weight after several “wake up calls” showed her she was damaging her health by being obese.

Pauline, who formerly weight 20 stone, is now a trim size 14, but it seems it took lots of warnings to convince her she had to do something about her heavy frame.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Pauline said, “I don’t know how many wake-up calls you need. I had my fair share, I suppose.

“But there were three pretty major ones in the space of a year that gave me the kick I obviously needed.”

Pauline went on to say that the first in a series of “shocks” about her weight came from her doctor, who told she could well need a hip replacement if she didn’t lose some of her bulk.

She said, “That was the lowest point. Needing an operation like that before you’re 50 just isn’t right, and it was really upsetting for me…

“I saw the X-ray and my right hip was more or less worn away. It’s a no-brainer.

“It’s a weight bearing joint so, even though I have osteoarthritis which damages your joints anyway, I had to accept a big part of the problem was my size.”

She also revealed that when she flew to Spain last year, she had to ask for an extension to her seat belt, which she found humiliating.

Pauline explained, “I pulled and pulled at the seatbelt waiting to hear the click and it just wasn’t coming, so I had to ask the attendant for an extension.

“I felt like c**p, to have to do that in front of my husband and kids.”

A final breaking point came when she weighed herself for the first time in years.

She added, “I was genuinely horrified to see I weighed 19st 6lb. I had no idea at all I’d gone that big.

“You don’t really notice when you’re fat – especially if you don’t check. And I didn’t check for years. You just go from one pair of black elasticated pants to the next.

“They don’t look great anyway, so it doesn’t matter if they’re one size up.

“I honestly can’t remember the last time I weighed myself before then. It must have been a long time ago because in my mind I was around the 17st mark.

“I’m not stupid. Of course I knew I was getting bigger – you know by the clothes you’re wearing. You just don’t really acknowledge it, you just buy the next size up.”

Since January, when Pauline started on the Lighter Life Total plan, she’s shed an amazing 8 stones and has reached her target weight of 11st 7lb.

She is now getting ready to reintroduce food into her diet.
