Fans of hit ITV drama Mr Selfridge are of course eagerly awaiting the second series, which will air early in the New Year…
We of course revealed earlier this month that acclaimed singer Alfie Boe is all set to make a special cameo appearance in the new run and will take on the role of Richard Chapman. The character will be a close personal friend of Lady Mae Loxley [Katherine Kelly] and is set to show up early in the new episodes.
The role will of course allow the star to show off his magnificent voice and it’s been confirmed that when Lady Mae asks Richard to sing at Selfridge’s charity concert, he’s happy to oblige, and as we’ll see, Richard comes back into Mae’s life at a time when she needs him most. In fact he quickly proves to be a very good friend indeed, offering both warm comfort and worldly wisdom in a time of need.
But is that all he’ll be offering?
Well, we caught up with the lovely Alfie recently to talk about – among other things – his role as Chapman, and of course, we quizzed him about the chance of romance between his character and Lady Mae.
More on that in a moment, but first, he began by saying, “I’m such a big fan of Mr Selfridge and so I was thrilled to have been offered the opportunity to be a part of the series…
“But I was incredibly nervous when we started filming. I felt like the new boy in school!
“But they welcomed me with open arms and made me part of the family. They really brought me on board and encouraged me to do the job.”
As mentioned above, we then asked Alfie if there’s going to be any hint of romance between his character and Lady Mae, to which he replied, “Well, I don’t know…
“In the episode that I shot, he’s certainly very protective over Lady Mae, I think they’ve got a very strong relationship as friends, but while the storyline hints towards a past relationship between them, I don’t think there’s any romance at that moment.
“But you never know…”
We then asked if there’s any chance that Alfie could reprise the role of Richard at some point, to which he replied, “Well there’s a possibility because it’s one of those roles that could come back.
“But of course, that’s out of my hands. That’s down to the writers, producers and directors, but I would jump at the chance to go back, I’d really love to.
“It’s a wonderful show, and I really loved being given the chance to show a different side of my abilities by being able to act without there being a musical aspect if you like…
“It was just nice to show that I could act a character.”
Finally, we asked Alfie about his gorgeous new album Trust, and which – if any – of the tracks on it are really favourites of his.
He said, “I have a number of favourite tracks to be honest, but there is one in particular that I really, really like which is God Give Me Strength…
“It’s by Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello in collaboration, and it’s a beautiful song; a very strong song that has a huge message behind it.
“It’s a big track, a big powerful classic track.”
