When faced with life-threatening illness and injury, humans all share one overwhelming instinct: to fight for life.
The series continues its celebration of the human body by exploring the prime of life, a time when human bodies are at their strongest and chances of survival are the greatest, despite the risks of injury or disease.
Coupling powerful human stories with advanced CGI, this programme looks at the injuries caused by a major accident, a live liver donation and a pregnancy with potentially fatal complications.
Charlotte has a congenital heart condition and has been told that it’s too dangerous for her to have a child. When she finds out she is expecting, Charlotte and her husband decide to continue with the pregnancy. Fight For Life shows the inside story of how a woman’s body adapts to one of nature’s greatest strains – carrying and delivering a child – and how Charlotte’s body is pushed to the limits.
Rubinder, a 26-year-old school teacher who recently moved from India to London with her husband, is hit by a speeding car. When the paramedics arrive on the scene they discover that she has horrific injuries. The first hour is vital and the medics, with the help of Rubinder’s body, battle to keep her alive.
Two years ago Scott, a Nasa rocket engineer, was diagnosed with an incurable liver disease, which will eventually lead to a painful death. With long waiting lists for transplants, the only other option is a live donation. However, this carries huge risks to both recipient and donor.
As Scott’s first cousin volunteers to be the donor, Fight For Life follows the gruelling 17-hour operation, showing exactly what is happening inside both their bodies. It reveals the amazing regenerative powers of one of our main organs.
Through dramatic internal reconstruction and real patient stories, Fight For Life celebrates the wonder of the human body.
