The countdown for the Christmas Number 1 Single here in the UK begins at 00:01am on Sunday, the 14th of December, with the winner to be announced at 7pm on Sunday the 21st of December.
According to the Official Charts Company there are a number of tracks in the running for the top spot this Christmas, so we thought we’d take a look at just five of them…
Don’t forget, it’s not just downloads and physical CD purchases that count towards the Christmas Number 1, because your online streaming activity counts as well, and has done since July 2014.
This also means that all those Christmas songs you’ve been streaming are all contenders and could impact the Top 10 dramatically like never before.
These are the five songs that we think have the best chance of becoming the 2014 Christmas Number 1 next weekend.
This year’s Band Aid single was released with slightly adapted lyrics that target their new campaign, which is of course fundraising in aid of the victims of the Ebola crisis in West Africa.
Band Aid 30 will need to keep up the momentum if they want to take the Christmas Number 1 spot this year. but it’s not impossible. Band Aid 20 held on for four weeks back in 2004.
Earlier in the week, during the midweek update, it was reported that the track was already in the running to top the charts this week, but can it hold on for another week?
Sure, it’s not a Christmas related single in any shape or form, but you can’t deny it’s catchy and if it makes it to the top tomorrow (14th December) what’s to say it won’t stay there?
The group have recorded a cover of The Farm’s ‘All Together Now’ with vocals from the likes of Alexandra Burke, Clean Bandit and Paul Potts to name but a few. All money raised goes to The British Red Cross and The Shorncliffe Trust.
This release stands as good a chance as any other to bag the Christmas Number 1, and let’s not forget, the charity previously topped the chart back in 2012 with ‘He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother’ so it’s entirely possible they’ll do the same again this year!
So far, since its initial release, the track has peaked at Number (7) on the Official Singles Chart but as we near Christmas, it could prove more popular.
The TV spot, featuring Monty The Penguin is on rotation a lot right now, so it’s entirely possible that over the next week, sales could increase dramatically.
His debut single ‘Something I Need’ will be available to buy from tonight (14th of December) and will be a strong contender for the 2014 Christmas Number 1 single!
Last year it was X Factor winner Sam Bailey who scooped the Christmas Number 1 single, so could the winner of the competition this year do the same?
