It’s no secret that former EastEnders star Danniella Westbrook formerly had serious issues with drug and alcohol abuse, however, she’s turned her life around and now wants to help children of families who’ve been affected by the same issues.
And as we reported last week, Danniella’s transformation from sinner to saint is well underway after she stepped in to save the life of a man who’d collapsed in the street…
But of her desire to foster children, The Sun reports that Danniella explained that she feels it’s her “calling” do so.
She said, “My friends say to me, ‘Could you really take someone’s kid and bring it up and then give it back?’
“And I say yes, because if someone had offered to take my son away from me when I was really ill, I would have grabbed the chance with both hands…
“I wanted social services to take him but they told me they couldn’t help.”
Danniella and her husband Kevin are parents to Kevin’s daughter Jordan, who’s 18, Danniella’s son Kai who’s 16, and their child together, Jodie, who’s 11.
Danniella, who’s a born-again Christian, continued, “I wanted another baby for years. It became a big issue for me.
“I was a bit of a lunatic. On the right days it would be, ‘Right, Kev, jump in,’ then afterwards I’d lie there for half an hour with my legs in the air.
“I was on fertility tablets but we never went for IVF. Finally Kevin said, ‘We’ve got three good, healthy kids, we’ve got a great family.’
“And he was right. If it’s not God’s way, it’s not the plan. So we are currently applying to be foster carers.
“I’m particularly keen to foster kids from drug and alcohol abuse homes and their siblings so they don’t get split up.
“They might come with a lot of anger and issues but we’re at an age where we can cope with it.
“It’s something we really want to do.”
Danniella – who of course played the role of Sam Mitchell in EastEnders and who now has a role in Hollyoaks – added that her past shouldn’t affect her future with regard to fostering.
She said, “There are a lot of checks to go through, and no family is 100 per cent perfect.
“I have spoken to a social worker about my suitability and they said I was fine, especially as my bi-polar is now under control with treatment.
“We just have to do the fostering course. You have to be a certain type of person to foster, but I’ve always had a house full of kids.
“I think it would be the most rewarding thing to parent someone else’s child while they get their lives back together and send them back to a stable home.
“The country is crying out for more foster carers. It will be the hardest job in the world, but it will be the best job in the world too.”
Danniella’s first appearance in Hollyoaks airs on February 18, but for now, here’s a reminder of her speaking about her drug issues on The Jeremy Kyle show recently…
