Former Lost star Naveen Andrews ready for Princess Diana film backlash
Former Lost star Naveen Andrews has revealed that he thinks he could well end up being public enemy number one having taken on the role of Princess Diana’s alleged lover Doctor Hasnat Khan in the forthcoming “mega movie” about the late Princess’ life.
Of his role in the film, which is entitled simply ‘Diana’, and which stars Naomi Watts in the title role, Naveen said, “There is a lot of affection for Diana and this film shows a period of her life that many people are not aware of.
“She was an icon but also an ordinary human being who was fiercely lonely and wanted a relationship with this very private man.
“Dr Khan gave a statement at her inquest and was at the funeral but never went to the press or spoke about their relationship publicly…”
He added to TV Biz, “I knew nothing about their affair before I was approached for the part. But he was a warm, decent, honourable person who was important to Diana.
“Princes William and Harry even met him when they were very small and Diana’s relationship with him is illuminating — it shows her in a new light.”
The film will also feature Diana’s final romance with Harrods heir Dodi Al Fayed, alongside whom she died in a Paris car crash in 1997.
Meanwhile, Naomi has admitted she was “absolutely terrified” about portraying such an icon.
However, Naveen – who of course played Syed in Lost – has no doubt that the public will love Naomi as Diana.
He said, “She’s a brilliant actress — and a British accent isn’t a problem because she was born in Kent. She lived here until her family moved to Australia when she was 14.”
And finally, of Dr Khan, Naveen said, “At the end of the day, Diana and Dr Khan were both real people.
“One of them was an iconic figure but the script is respectful to both.
“Whatever critics of the film might have to say about it, I don’t think Diana would be unhappy with what we have done.”
I can’t wait to see this film! Will you watch it?
