Oh dear, these are the words us Gleek’s never wanted to hear… the end is in sight!
This afternoon at the Television Critics Association Press Tour, FOX entertainment chairman, Kevin Reilly has said that the end is in sight for Glee, and he doesn’t expect the show to run beyond season six. He also spoke about the memorial episode for the late Cory Monteith.
He told The Hollywood Reporter: “I would not anticipate it goes beyond two more seasons”. However, he did go on to say that you should “never say never”, admitting at the moment, it’s too early to give a definite answer.
Reilly continued: “There’s two very clear arcs to get to that end and conclude. Listen, if we discover a new crop of kids and there’s some breakout, who knows? But right now, we’re thinking about two seasons”.
He also went on to speak about the memorial episode which will be aired in tribute of the late Cory Monteith.
The special episode is set to be the third episode of the fifth season. He said the episode will tackle drug addiction, with proceeds from the show’s music sales going to a scholoship fund for kids established in the name of Cory Monteith.
He added that the death of Monteith altered the conclusion that co-creator’s Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck had for the show.
Unfortunately, not much could be said about the memorial episode as the script has not yet been written, but we do know that drugs will not be the cause of the death of Monteith’s character, Finn Hudson.
“That episode will deal with the incidents directly involved with Cory’s passing, [including] drug use” he confirmed.
“When you see some people struggle with addiction, they are easily put in a category. ‘He was dark, she was always a partier’. Cory was big open life force. He was not a problem, he looked straight as an arrow. He was open about his addiction in the past, just not as open about it in the presence. Everybody was shocked, but this was an accident. It happened to someone struggling with an addiction” Reilly added.
Following on from the tribute episode, Glee will go on hiatus for three weeks whilst the direction of the show is assessed.
Glee returns to FOX on September 26. The special memorial episode will air on October 10.
