While the US is already a handful of episodes into hit new show ‘Gotham’ the UK finally got in on the action last night (13th October) as it aired on Channel 5.

A few hours before the first airing for UK fans, it was confirmed by Fox that the network had requested six additional episodes on top of what had already been ordered, bringing the total season order to 22 episodes.

‘Gotham’ if you didn’t know, is an origin story following the great Super-Villians and vigilantes from DC Comics, looking at the story of Batman as you’ve never seen it before.

The story follows James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) as he rises through one of the most dangerous and corrupt cities currently on the brink of good and evil, and of course not forgetting Bruce ‘Batman’ Wayne himself as he deals with life after losing his parents.

The hit show also follows other well known characters from the franchise including Catwoman, The Riddler, Penguin, and more showing how they develop into how we know them now.

Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group announced the news of six additional episodes in a statement yesterday which now brings the total series order to 22 episodes.

The statement reads:

“GOTHAM debuted as one of the most buzzed-about shows of the fall, and with good reason. Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon have created an incredibly rich world, with characters that draw you in and a cast that brings to life these heroes and villains in a way we’ve never seen before,”

“We are so excited to see where Bruno, Danny and the entire GOTHAM team take this story over the course of this season, and so thankful to all the fans who have embraced it this fall.”

The decision behind the extension of the show from 16 episodes to 22 was quite obvious after its premiere episode in the US drew 14.1 million viewers in the first seven days.

It went on to be streamed more than two million times on the likes of FOX NOW and Hulu, with the second and third episodes continuing this positive trend each delivering a 4.0 rating or higher.
