Freddie Starr has become the last celebrity to be arrested as part of the ongoing inquiry into the abuse claims against Jimmy Savile.

The 69 year old star has repeatedly denied claims that he was implicit in the former ‘Jim’ll Fix It’ presenter’s alleged systematic assaults on young female fans, however police have reason to suspect that this isn’t the case and the comedian was arrested at 5.45pm on and taken into police custody close to his Warwickshire home.

Starr was arrested on suspicion of sexual offences and a spokesman for Scotland Yard said:

“Officers working on Operation Yewtree have this evening, Thursday 1 November, arrested a man in his 60s in connection with the investigation.

“The man, from Warwickshire, was arrested at approximately 17.45 hrs on suspicion of sexual offences, and has been taken into police custody locally. The individual falls under the strand of the investigation we have termed ‘Savile and others’.”

Freddie is the second celebrity to be arrested as part of the ongoing Jimmy Savile inquiry – Gary Glitter was also questioned by police last week – although he denies that he is guilty of any wrong doing.

The story broke when a woman claimed in an ITV documentary that he had assaulted her when she was just 14 years old.

Karin Ward claimed that the comedian had touched her inappropriately during an appearance on the television show Clunk Click with Jimmy Savile in the 1970s.

At first Freddie denied ever appearing on the show, but later changed his story when photos emerged of him with Ward on set.

During a recent appearance on ITV’s This Morning, on which he was joined by his young fiance, Starr insisted:

“I know from own self being, that I would never ever, ever touch an underage girl…ever.

“Listen when I was in 1974 I was getting my shirt ripped off my back by girls, getting jumped all over by them but I kept away from them, I always kept away because I knew that spelled trouble.

I have never, ever groped a woman in my life…in my life.”
