Freddie Starr on Karin Ward’s Jimmy Savile allegations: ‘I would never ever, ever touch an underage girl…ever.’
Freddie Starr has insisted that he has ‘never, ever’ behaved inappropriately with an ‘underage girl.’
The ageing comedian appeared on This Morning just minutes ago, to address allegations of sexual assault made by Karin Ward.
The furore erupted after the airing of an ITV documentary, which featured a number of women who claimed they were assaulted by legendary TV presenter Jimmy Savile. One of Savile’s accusers subsequently claimed in an interview that Starr was present in the TV presenter’s dressing room in the 1970s and touched her inappropriately also.
Freddie conducted an interview with Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby today and revealed when he first heard about the allegations being made by Karin Ward. He said:
“When my lawyer phoned me up and said what you’ve just said about the Jimmy Savile thing. He said ‘did you know Jimmy Savile’ I said ‘no’.
He asked if I had ever done his show and I said ‘I can’t recall.’”
It turned out that Starr had appeared on a show with Savile and that Ward was in the audience at the time. However, he claims that he was not lying, just simply didn’t recall the event.
He added:
“I have done hundreds and thousands of shows on television and on the road. I am on the road at the moment, up and down the country. I’ve been doing that for 50 years.”
During the interview, Holly asked Freddie if he had ever been in a dressing room with Jimmy in the past. He replied:
“No, never in a million years. I never liked people in my dressing room. I don’t even allow people in my dressing room now. I have never allowed people in my dressing room.”
Starr continued:
“I know from own self being, that I would never ever, ever touch an underage girl…ever.
“Listen when I was in 1974 I was getting my shirt ripped off my back by girls, getting jumped all over by them but I kept away from them, I always kept away because I knew that spelled trouble.
I have never, ever groped a woman in my life…in my life.”
Freddie is not defending Jimmy Savile at all and thinks the star’s actions were reprehensible. He insisted:
“I think he’s abused his position….despicable. The way he has conducted himself, that is disgusting.
I do feel sorry for anyone that’s been abused, of course I do.”
Despite all the allegations and the press furore, police have yet to contact Starr, as the woman in question has not made an official complaint.
Freddie is hoping they do get involved and said:
“I would welcome a police investigation. I want to be questioned by police…I want it badly.”
The star suffered a major heart attack in April 2010, resulting in quadruple heart bypass surgery. He admitted that stress relating to this recent scandal is causing him more health issues and admitted:
“I have got to go to the hospital later on today, to get a check up on my heart because I’ve been getting palpitations. Stress goes right to the heart.
If I do have a heart attack and die on my gravestone it will say ‘I told you, I was innocent.’”
