Tyrion and Stannis are set to go head to head at last in the next episode of “Game of Thrones”.
In the penultimate episode of the second season of the hit HBO fantasy drama, Stannis finally arrives in Kings Landing to claim the throne from young Joffrey and even though he doesn’t care much for his boy nephew, it is the imp that leads the way in the battle against the rightful heir.
The bell rings to announce the arrival of the enemy troops in the capital of Westeros and in the ensuing war named the ‘Blackwater Battle’, both Tyrion and King Joffrey realise that their fate may not be what they had hoped for, as their people and armies are heavily outnumbered by Stannis’ men.
The scenes in the episode will be hugely impressive, and will feature the series’s first large-scale war sequence, the confrontation between the Baratheons and the Lannisters that the whole season has been building towards for months.
It makes a nice change from season one, when most of the battle took place off screen because of budgetary confinements. The big change in season two was thanks to showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss convincing HBO to approve a “considerable” increase in the series’s budget in order to stage the battle on screen.
The two writers have admitted that thanks to the cold and wet climate in Belfast – and we know….we live there! – and the fact that the battle was shot over “pretty much a month straight of night shoots”, the actors’ battle-weariness was no act, and often they didn’t even need weather machines to simulate the wind and rain.
“Blackwater” will air in the US on Sunday, May 27 on HBO and on Monday 28th in the UK, on Sky Atlantic.
Speaking about the awe inspiring scenes, Liam Cunningham who plays Ser Davos Seaworth recently gushed, “It’s gonna be immense. I think it’s gonna be beautiful.”
