Game of Thrones will launch on Sky Atlantic one day behind American premiere!

via press release:

On Monday 18th April, HBO series Game of Thrones will launch on Sky Atlantic HD, just a day after its premiere in America.

Based on the series of best-selling novels – A Song of Ice and Fire – by George R.R. Martin, the ten part epic looks set to redefine the fantasy genre. Following kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and noblemen as they vie for power, Game of Thrones was created by BAFTA award nominee David Benioff (The Kite Runner) and American author D.B. Weiss and stars Sean Bean, Lena Headey, Mark Addy, Alfie Allen, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage.

Stuart Murphy, Director of Programmes, Sky Atlantic HD, said: “”With Game of Thrones HBO is going to redefine the term ‘event TV’. We know our customers’ anticipation for the series has reached fever pitch, so we wanted to ensure they could see the show as close to its US broadcast as humanly possible. The series is a true spectacle that will surprise and captivate audiences, and it’s a huge testament to HBO’s bravura film-making that they continue to subvert the genres we know and love, this time in the fantasy genre. We will transmit within 24 hours of the show being on air in the States, so Sky Atlantic HD can bring Sky viewers the best TV as close as possible to its American release.”

Game of Thrones is an expansive saga set in the Seven Kingdoms of the mythical continent Westeros and follows several noble families as they vie to rule the land. Reminiscent of Medieval Europe, the series is set in 298-99 AL (After Landing).

Creator D.B. Weiss said: “Game of Thrones is set in a fantasy kingdom called Westeros, a place that is like our world in many ways and unlike our world in many other ways. It’s about the struggle for the Iron Throne, which is the seat of power in this kingdom.” Co-creator David Benioff added: “Fantasy is one of the most successful genres in the history of storytelling, but no one’s ever done it the HBO way, where the focus is on character and psychology rather than spectacle. Knowing the essential shape of the entire series from the beginning is an incredible luxury for us, as adapters of the material.”

The series opens with King Richard Baratheon (BAFTA® award nominee Mark Addy, The Full Monty, A Knight’s Tale), who is married to Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey, 300) of the wealthy and corrupt House of Lannister, asking Eddard ‘Ned’ Stark (Sean Bean, Red Riding, The Lord of the Rings) to become his chief advisor after the questionable death of his right-hand man.

In the east, there is a threat to the throne by the exiled teenage Princess Daenerys (Emilia Clarke, Doctors)and her brother Viserys (Harry Lloyd, Doctor Who), whose family ruled the Kingdoms for many years before their bloody deaths.

At the edge of the Kingdoms, dangerous powers are stirring north of The Wall, an ancient barrier of ice stretching 300 miles and standing 700 feet tall. Ned’s bastard son Jon Snow (Kit Harington, Greys Inbetween) joins the brotherhood of the Night’s Watch, a group sworn to protect the Kingdoms from the perils that lurk beyond the freezing barricade.

While the heroes and villains in such tales are usually clearly delineated, the morality underpinning Game of Thrones is infinitely more complex. Featuring full-blooded, multi-faceted characters whose conflicting motivations and ethics are both completely credible and deeply intriguing, this is a dark, gritty tale of power, treachery and greed that belies its fantasy trappings.

Author and executive producer George R. R. Martin commented: “Game of Thrones is an epic fantasy, with a conflict for power at its core. But it’s more than just politics; there are questions of loyalty, lust, sexual obsession, desire, defiance, history. In this world, when you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. Honour and mercy have no place in the game of thrones.”

Game of Thrones also stars Aidan Gillen (The Wire, thorne), Charles Dance (Going Postal, Trinity), Michelle Fairley (Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows), Richard Madden (Hope Springs), Iain Glenn (Doctor Who), James Cosmo (Sons of Anarchy) and Jason Momoa (the upcoming Conan The Barbarian).

Game of Thrones will have a truly epic sweep with Ireland, Scotland and Malta providing locations for the many environments of Westeros.
An engrossing, ground-breaking fable that will bring a new level of realism to the fantasy genre, Game of Thrones is a true HBO original. Coming to Sky Atlantic HD and Sky Atlantic from Monday 18th April.
