Gary Glitter (Paul Gadd) released on bail after being quizzed by police for 10 hours as part of Jimmy Savile inquiry

Yesterday, we reported that convicted paedophile Gary Glitter – whose real name is Paul Gadd – had been arrested in an early morning raid on his home in London…

He was taken to Charing Cross police station where he was quizzed for ten hours by officers who’re working on Operation Yewtree, which encompasses allegations of child sex abuse against the late TV presenter Sir Jimmy Savile and “others.”

Of Gadd’s arrest, a Scotland Yard spokesman said, “Officers working on Operation Yewtree have today arrested a man in his 60s in connection with the investigation.

“The man, from London, was arrested at approximately 7.15am on suspicion of sexual offences, and has been taken into custody at a London police station.

“The individual falls under the strand of the investigation we have termed ‘Savile and others’.”

Gadd was released on bail at 5pm last night and ordered to remain “available” for further questioning should it be required.

In 1999, Gadd was jailed in the UK for four months for possessing indecent images of children, and before that, he was imprisoned for three year in Vietnam after being convicted of child abuse offences.

The Sun adds, “His arrest comes after The Sun revealed yesterday how 15 celebrities were terrified they would be implicated in the scandal.

“Household names from the ’60s and ’70s have denied wrongdoing, but fear they could be drawn into the affair.”

In addition to the police investigation into allegations of child abuse that have been made against Savile, the BBC are carrying out their own internal inquiry into claims from alleged victims that much of the abuse took place on the corporation’s premises.

There have of course also been claims that top BBC executives were aware of allegations of child sex abuse against Savile, but did nothing about it.

Yesterday, BBC Trust chairman Lord Patten vowed that the organisation would tell the truth about the Savile scandal.

He said, “Can it really be the case that no one knew what he was doing?

“Did some prefer not to follow up their suspicions because of this criminal’s popularity and place in the schedules?

“My immediate priority is to get to the bottom of the Savile scandal and to make any and every change necessary to learn the lessons from our independent investigations.”

We’ll keep you posted on any new developments in this story.
