Ghost Whisperer: The Collector - Episode Guide

Welcome back to the town of Grandview folks. It seems like ages since we last did a review of Melinda Gordon’s liaisons with the restless spirits of that town.

Tonight’s episode is a doozie, paving the way for an awesome series two climax. Not only does Melinda meet another ‘ghost whisperer’, but she discovers some unfinished business from series one, and uncovers a dark secret Professor Payne has been hiding. Phew! Read on for more…

The episode opens with Melinda and her intrepid used-goods assistant Delia attending a funeral. The stiff is the wife of one of Delia’s acquaintances, a young gold-digger who unfortunately (for her) died before her ageing husband.

The spirit of the lady is standing over the coffin, and speaks to Melinda about her affection for her husband, but also mentions that though she can see ‘the light’, she can also see figures blocking it. The second hint that something strange is going on is when Melinda walks into another room and sees the ghost of a biker raging at his relatives for not being able to see him. Melinda sees another man approach the leather-clad spirit and speak to him. That’s right, there’s another Ghost Whisperer in Grandview.

Melinda goes to bed that night conflicted with excitement at knowing another person shares her abilities, and curious as to whether they share the same motivation. She’s rudely awoken by a ghost, one she recognises from the Grandview plane crash - a flight attendant. The girl tells Melinda that she made a mistake in not passing over, and abruptly vanishes after pleading for her help.

When Melinda next encounters the mysterious Whisperer, he’s talking to the flight attendant ghost in an alleyway. She too claims that there’s something blocking the light, and disappears with a shriek. Melinda pursues the guy and he introduces himself as Gabriel Lawrence, and she invites him for dinner to get to know him.

They have a lot in common, but Gabriel admits that he befriends ghosts and it makes him sad when they cross over. They agree to try and help the flight attendant together.

Gabriel and Melinda meet at the crash site and speak to the flight attendant. She’s obviously scared of something, but Gabriel makes some persuasive arguments and comes across as genuine. They’re disturbed by Professor Payne, who’s decided to monitor them from afar with a special camera.

After Gabriel leaves, Payne shows Melinda the footage which clearly shows the traces of ghosts which are attached to Gabriel. What’s going on?

Well, with the help of Professor Payne, Melinda discovers that Gabriel was institutionalised for years because of his gift, and that he’d lied about his past. While in Payne’s home, she reveals that she can see the ghost of his wife Kate. Melinda intervenes on behalf of his wife, and discovers that Professor Payne is still in denial about her death.

She reveals to Payne that his wife is present, and that there’s a journal kept by his wife in the bookcase. However, the journal contains Kate’s confession of an affair she had because Payne was so absorbed in his work her barely noticed her.

Melinda leaves and follows Gabriel to his home, which is filled to the brim with partying ghosts - many of whom she’s encountered before. The flight attendant is there too, begging for help. She argues with Gabriel about his methods, but he claims a deeper bond with the dead than the living. He also hints that there’s a deeper conspiracy going on and that he knows why the ghosts are blocking the light.

Melinda flees the house, but finds the flight attendant in the car. They talk, and Melinda uses a form of regression therapy to help her to cross over.

Back at home, a dead-eyed Professor Payne is waiting for Melinda with his wife’s diary of her affair. Why would she want to hurt him with a revelation that he had no suspicion of in the first place. A larger plot is becoming clear, so Jim, Rick and Melinda decide to confront Gabriel at his house.

When they arrive at Gabriel’s, they discover a room filled with pictures of Melinda and also some of Jim, Rick and Delia. This suggests that Gabriel’s been watching Melinda for some time, even before the series one plane crash. They hear a crying from downstairs - Payne’s wife.

She’s been in league with Gabriel, but was left behind because of her attachment to Rick. She confesses that everyone connected to Melinda is a target, and that there’s a plot to make the dead stronger than the living. She asks for Ricks forgiveness, but Rick is shell-shocked and refuses outright, saying that there’s too much pain for him to forgive her.

This sends Kate over the edge and she leaves with the chilling threat that they’ll all feel pain soon. She disappears, leaving a brief trace of a skull in the air. Oooohhhhh…
