Ghost Whisperer: The Night We Met (Episode Guide)
Ah, the anniversary episode. It’s been five years since Melinda and Jim met, and she’s window shopping for a present. A shop opposite is on fire and Jim - a paramedic - is at the scene. An explosion knocks him off his feet and at the same time, Melinda see a flaming spirit walking inside the shop.
Later, Melinda and Jim are back home and she gets annoyed with him for apparently forgetting their anniversary in favor of a poker night with the boys. Later she has a flashback to the night they met.
The next day, Professor Payne visits Melinda in her shop with a question: do you feel you have supernatural powers, do you claim to be connected to the supernatural? Melinda evades the question, and they instead discuss the symbolic meaning of the number 5.
In bed that night, Melinda wakes to discover smoke coming under the bedroom door and the banister burning with a spectral flame. She goes goes downstairs and encounters a ghost with the complexion of Freddie Kreuger. The ghost has a simple message: “It burns, it burns. He knows why.”
Melinda meets Jim’s arson inspector friend in the shop and he tells her that although the first fire (a year previously) was definitely an arson, there were no signs that the recent fire was started deliberately. A man died in the first fire, and it was suspected that the dead man was the arsonist killed by his own actions.
Melinda talks to the restaurant owner, Jesse, but he’s offhand with her and tells her to go away. She later has another flashback to her first meeting with Jim - at a fire in a building where she lived. A woman tells her that her husband is still trapped at the bottom of the stairs, and Melinda convinces Jim to go back inside and find him. They eventually find the man under some debris - and his wife dead beside him. When he’s clear of the building, she walks back into the burning building and into the light…
Melinda tracks down the dead man’s wife through the funeral home and she meets her at the shop. Mrs Chen tells her that her husband started off as a chef and ended up dealing with most of the business matters also. He became stressed and resentful. When Melinda reveals that she’s able to speak to her husband, Mrs Chen becomes agitated and mysteriously says she doesn’t want him to see her.
She tracks Warren Chen’s ghost down at the restaurant and talks to him. He admits that he was stressed and hated his job, even dreamed of the restaurant burning down. But before he can move on, he needs to give his wife a message - he just can’t remember what…
Melinda decides to speak to Mrs Chen again, and Jim shows her a website that can find a corresponding address for any phone. Curiously, Mrs Chen’s number is traced to the same address as Jesse, the restaurant owner. When Melinda calls, she sees Jesse and Mrs Chen kissing on the lawn. As Mrs Chen drives off, she sees Melinda outside the house.
Back at the restaurant, Melinda and Warren talk again. When she tells him about his wife and Jesse, Warren says he’s going to burn them and disappears. He appears at Jesse’s house and starts blowing out the windows.
Mrs Chen manages to call Warren out of the house and it’s not long before the spirit suddenly remembers the actual events on the night of the fire - he had found a piece of stained glass that he was going to give to his wife as a gift. He accidentally left the glass in work and returned to get it, but discovered Jesse in the act of burning down the building. They argued for a while, but as Warren tried to escape the building, he found his path blocked off. Desperate, he opened a window and this immediately made the first worse, and he caught fire. Jesse eventually escaped and allowed Warren to take the blame for the fire.
Suitably unburdened, Warren finally moves on, leaving the piece of stained glass for his wife.
More touchingly, Melinda believes that Perfect Jim has forgotten their anniversary - how out of character would that be? - and he tactlessly asks her to fetch his coat so that he can go to the poker game. As she opens the cupboard, a package falls out and she opens it to discover a red umbrella inside - the red umbrella that broke on the night they met and that Jim said he would replace. Only took him five years!!!
Nice to see these little moments where Melinda and Jim do normal couple type things - it lends a bit of reality to them when sometimes they are sickeningly perfect!
