Wild at Heart is of course filmed in Africa, and filming outside can often be a punishing and warm business…
So it’s little wonder that the cast and crew often enjoy a quick swim on-set to cool down, however, when giraffe Lucy decided to follow suit, she got herself stuck in the pool and had to be rescued.
ITV report that nine year old Lucy broke down fences surrounding the Leopard’s Den set, and slipped into the swimming pool there.
The show’s producer, Adam Friedlander, said, “We are not 100% sure how she fell into the pool…
“But we think she may have been drinking from it and with her head being too low became disorientated and fell in.
“The animals on the reserve roam free and we are of course very mindful of their safety and try to interfere with their habitat as little as possible…
“However, accidents can happen and it appeared Lucy had managed to squeeze through the fence before falling into the pool.”
ITV’s statement about the incident goes on to say that after several attempts to free Lucy, the fire brigade were called to use their specialist lifting equipment to rescue her. However, it proved unnecessary as she was tempted out by the offer of food!
And as Lucy is expecting a baby, the entire cast and crew heaved a huge sigh of relief when she was back on dry land.
Actor Stephen Tomkinson, who of course plays wildlife vet Danny Trevanion said of the incident, “It was such a bizarre sight – as soon I walked round the corner all I could see was this great neck sticking out of the pool!
“She remained really calm throughout the whole thing and after draining the pool and digging a trench for her to walk up she emerged, all be it awkwardly, out of the pool unharmed.”
Wild at Heart is back on our screens in the New Year for a brand new ten part series. Whoop!
