The MTV EMAs are taking place tomorrow night live from Amsterdam but already next years host has been revealed as Glasgow at a special conference earlier today.
The 2014 MTV European Music Awards will take place in the newly built SSE Hydro which only opened a few months ago but already is selling out events for months in advance.
Next year marks the 20th anniversary for the MTV EMAs and for the first time ever Glasgow will play host to the huge night in music. Edinburgh previously played host 10 years ago.
The MTV EMAs is just another large event that Glasgow and Scotland can add to their Homecoming Scotland programme and the decision was confirmed by the executive vice president of Viacom International Media Networks, Bruce Gillmer earlier today.
Bruce Gillmer commented on the decision which was reached following various discussions between MTV, EventScotland and the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, he said:
“Each year, the MTV EMA is an amazing, multi-platform music experience for our audiences around the world, presented through a dynamic, talent-driven spectacle that only MTV can deliver,”
“As one of the world’s great music cities, Glasgow is always a favorite with artists and the new SSE Hydro will provide the perfect backdrop for the MTV EMA in its 20th anniversary year. We’re thrilled that the eyes of the music world will be on Glasgow next year.”
Gordon Matheson, Glasgow City Council leader also commented: “It has been our ambition as part of Glasgow’s major events strategy to attract the MTV EMA for a number of years and I’m delighted that MTV has accepted the city’s invitation.
“Glasgow proved to be the ideal destination for MTV Crashes in 2010, when Diddy Dirty Money and a fantastic crowd showed MTV’s global audience that Glasgow is a city that knows how to party.”
He also added: “Since then, we’ve been working to bring the world’s greatest music event to Glasgow and I’m delighted we can today announce the next chapter in this exciting partnership.”
“Hosting an event of the magnitude and international reach of the MTV EMA reinforces Glasgow’s enviable reputation as one of the world’s leading music cities.”
The SSE Hydro, located in Glasgow beside the famous SECC and Clyde Auditorium (also known as the ‘Armadillo’ because of its design) has already welcomed the likes of Rod Stewart already.
It also is set to also welcome Arctic Monkeys, Calvin Harris, Jessie J, Gary Barlow, Bruno Mars, The Wanted and many many more.
The venue has a capacity of 12,000 (with everyone seated) or 13,000 for a standing event and is within easy reach of the city centre so it’s a perfect location for the 2014 MTV EMAs.
