Sky has also secured exclusive UK rights to THE GLEE PROJECT
Sky today (Monday 13 June, 2011) announced a deal with 20th Century Fox Television Distribution to become the exclusive UK home of the award-winning series GLEE. The deal will bring the third and all future seasons of GLEE to Sky 1 HD exclusively from the autumn.
Currently in its second season, GLEE is a biting musical comedy that quickly established itself as a pop-culture phenomenon. From season three onwards the show will find a new home in the heart of Sky 1 HD’s schedule, allowing Sky customers able to enjoy the show in primetime on Sky 1 HD, on-demand via Sky Anytime+ and Sky+, and online through Sky Player. It will also be available in high definition.
The show complements the existing Sky 1 HD schedule, which is aimed at providing a broad mix of popular entertainment. It also cements Sky 1 HD’s strategy for bringing together the very best in US comedy alongside home grown hits. With a number of Sky’s commissions in full production, including An Idiot Abroad, Trollied, Spy, Mount Pleasant and Stella, as well as established acquired hits such as Modern Family, The Middle and The Simpsons, Sky is continuing to back its commitment to offer its customers truly innovative comedy.
In addition to GLEE, Sky has secured the exclusive UK rights to THE GLEE PROJECT. The ten part reality series – which Entertainment Weekly described as a “must see show,” The Hollywood Reporter described as “compelling” and OK describes as “the best talent competition ever to hit TV. Period.” – will see performers compete for a multi-episode guest-starring role on season three of the hit series under the watchful eye of GLEE’s casting director, Robert Ulrich, GLEE’schoreographer, Zach Woodlee, and GLEE’s vocalist, vocal arranger and songwriter, Nikki Anders. THE GLEE PROJECT will be exec produced by Glee’s executive producers Ryan Murphy and Dante Di Loreto.
From over 40,000 entries, and an exhaustive nationwide talent search, THE GLEE PROJECT uncovers a unique group of artists with both professional and amateur backgrounds all vying for a seven episode guest starring role on GLEE. The series will air in the autumn.
Stuart Murphy, Director of Programmes, Sky 1 HD, Sky 1, 2 and Pick TV commented: “GLEE has been nothing short of a phenomenon and we’re thrilled to secure the future of the show for our customers with this life of series deal. It’s the perfect fit for Sky 1 and we’re thrilled to be able to build on the success it has already achieved, and we hope our customers will be as chuffed and excited as we all are. This deal is part of a long-term commitment to investing in programming – both originated and acquired – that will continue to deliver the best choice, quality and value to our customers. After me everyone…DON’T STOP BELIEVING.”
The deal was negotiated by Sarah Wright, Controller of Acquisitions, Entertainment, Sky, and Steve Cornish, SVP and Managing Director, 20th Century Fox.
