Glee: Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester) insists cast shake-up is “realistic” for the show to “evolve”

When Glee returns later this year, it’s all change at McKinley High, but, Jane Lynch who plays fierce sports teacer Sue Sylvester is calm about the changes.

Speaking to TV Line, the star says that change is a part of portraying a high school – students graduate and move on and so the show has to do the same if it is going to keep coming back!

We also revealed a few days back that Heather Morris (Brittany), Mark Salling (Puck), Amber Riley (Mercedes) and Harry Shum, Jr (Mike) will not be returning as series regulars in the forthcoming season – instead they will guest star now and then.

But, upon saying that we do have a familiar new line-up of new directions. Melissa Benoist (Marley), Jacob Artist (Jake), Becca Tobin (Kitty), Blake Jenner (Ryder) and Alex Newell (Unique) will now be the central focus of season five of Glee, when it returns this fall.

Speaking about the show, Lynch said: “That’s the nature of portraying a realistic view of high school: Kids graduate. They move on.

“I like that we’re following some of the kids to New York where they’re trying to make it as actors and actresses. But the show will evolve, and when a show evolves that means you have to let some people go, and let some storylines go, so that you can pursue new ones.”

It isn’t all doom and gloom as Lynch’s hilarious character, Sue Sylvester will be returning for the fifth season. Unfortunately, she didn’t let slip what may be coming up for her as she hasn’t read any of the scripts as of yet. She says she will “figure in the plot somehow, since I am coming back. But how will I be allowed back? Your guess is as good as mine”.

Of course, as you will know if you watch the show, Sylvester was banned from stepping foot back on campus in the season four finale after saying she accidentally fired a gun in the school. However, it was actually her favourite student Becky who fired the gun – Sylvester covered for her!

Sylvester is currently promoting her new series, Hollywood Game Night which premieres on NBC at 10/9c on July 11. She said if the show takes off and becomes a hit, she’ll make sure she makes both Hollywood Game Night and Glee work for her. She said: “It’ll take a little logistical juggling – but we’ll make it work”.

Glee returns to FOX on September 19.
