Gossip Girl’s fifth and penultimate series drew to a close in the US last night and if you haven’t seen the episode yet, then you probably shouldn’t read on, as we are about to provide loads and loads of spoilers.
So if you have seen “The Return of the Ring,” or really can’t wait until you watch it and want to know all that happened on the Upper East Side and what on earth is going on with the return of Bart Bass, then keep on reading.
So the big question of the night was who would Blair choose…again! Would she pick poor boy Dan who seems to have shed much of his integrity and certainly has been working off a very faulty moral compass in the last series, or would she opt for Chuck, who has always held a special place in her heart?
Chair fans rejoice, because ultimately Blair went with her heart and picked Chuck…not that he made it easy.
Blair chose Chuck! After an internal debate about which love is better—with Dan she feels safe, with Chuck she feels vulnerable—Blair ended up choosing Chuck. Alas, timing was, once again, not on their side as Chuck had just been ousted from Bass Industries by his recently resurrected father for always putting Blair before the company. She followed the former bad boy to a French casino, where she very literally bet everything on him….But his daddy issues seemed to take precedence in the episode and we will have to wait for the sixth – and final – season to see if he responds positively to her declaration.
The whole play for Chuck only came about, after Dan read Blair’s diary – that Serena leaked to Gossip Girl – and let his insecurities get the better of him. He slept with Serena – again! – and issued an ultimatum to Princess B. But it didn’t work out and in the end, lonely boy was rejected by the two main women in his life. As a response, he joined forces with Georgina (Michelle Trachtenberg) and the two are now planning to release an explosive tell-all book about the secrets of our favourite Upper East Side residents.
Serena’s betrayal sees her and Blair return to an old style warfare, that we were used to seeing back in season one and two. After accidentally leaking her diary, Serena then tricked Dan into sleeping with her and recorded the whole thing. She then went into meltdown and left town, last seen doing drugs with a couple of strangers.
Meanwhile, Bart Bass’ return has left Lily in a precarious position, as since he’s alive and well then technically she is still married to Chuck’s dad. She had to decide between repairing her relationship with musician and nice guy Rufus, or plumping for the wealthy Bart and all that comes with his lifestyle. In the end she chose Bart, a decision which we think she will live to regret, as he is definitely up to something sinister and we expect that all to play out in the new series. Poor Rufus saw his marriage to the ice queen annulled.
Lastly, poor Nate (Chace Crawford) has had his heart broken once more. Just when he thought he has found ‘the one’ in unpretentious Lola, she got a better offer and left New York, telling him that she wouldn’t be back.
