Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively to play Freddie Mercury’s girlfriend Mary Austin in new biopic!
Former Gossip Girl star, Blake Lively, has been cast to play Mary Austin, the girlfriend of Queen front man Freddie Mercury, in a new biopic about the late singer’s life, the Sun newspaper reports.
Lively, who played Serena in the hit US teen drama, will star alongside Borat star, Sacha Baron Cohen, who is believed to have been cast as Mercury. The comedy actor is reportedly taking singing lessons ahead of starring the untitled film, in order to do the part justice.
Mary Austin had a long-term relationship with Freddie Mercury in the 1970’s after being introduced to him by Freddie’s band mate, Brian May.
They lived together for several years before Freddie cheated on her with an American man, but the pair remained close friends right up until the singer’s untimely death in 1991 after a long battle with AIDS.
Mary always held a special place in Freddie’s heart, with the singer even admitting in 1985 that no one since had come close to replacing her, explaining in an interview:
“All my lovers asked me why they couldn’t replace Mary [Austin], but it’s simply impossible.
“The only friend I’ve got is Mary and I don’t want anybody else. To me, she was my common-law wife. To me, it was a marriage. We believe in each other, that’s enough for me.”
