Is there anything that our Government won’t resort to? We heard last week that Prime Minister, Gordon Brown is planning his own reality TV show, and now the Daily Telegraph reports that they are planning to use teen soap, Hollyoaks, to promote their new diploma qualification.
Minutes from one Education meeting said: “There should be an imaginative communications strategy, for example involving popstars and Hollyoaks storylines.”
A spokesman for the department confirmed the plans, saying: “We are delighted to work with television programmes or celebrities that want to help young people choose a qualification.
“It is absolutely essential that every young person is fully informed of all the options available to them.”
However, shadow schools secretary Michael Gove rubbished the idea saying: “Simply shoving a mention of diplomas into Hollyoaks won’t suddenly make the qualification glamorous.
“The Government has failed to market diplomas properly, that’s one of the reasons why fewer than half the number of students are taking the qualifications in September.”
