Grey’s Anatomy: It Should Have Been Denny At The Elevator!

Grey’s Anatomy boss Shonda Rhimes has revealed that they had to reshoot the final scenes of Grey’s Anatomy’s fifth season after she had a last minute change of heart.
Shonda told Entertainment Weekly that the final scene showing Izzie Stevens in an elevator, was originally shot with her ex-fiancée Denny, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. However after filming had wrapped Shonda had a realisation that Izzie was being escorted to the afterlife by the wrong person.
“Something didn’t feel right,” Rhimes said. “And then it hit me, ‘My God, it’s George! When the elevator opens, it should be George we see.’”
However T.R Knight had assumed he was done for the season and had shaved his head. As Rhimes explains, “[Director] Rob Corn calls me up and goes, ‘What do we do?’”
George had just enlisted for the army so the solution was simple.
“I said, ‘Put him in a military uniform!’ It wasn’t a big amazing plan I had.”
Knight admitted: “It was brilliant of Shonda to put George in the dress blue. It was such a powerful image.”
Katherine Heigl had already began filming a movie in Atlanta, so she and Knight had to confer by phone to ensure their expressions were in sync.
“I was like, ‘What did you do in that scene?’” Knight laughed. “It’s nice when you’ve worked with someone for five years. There’s a shorthand.”
