With the recent news that Grey’s Anatomy will return minus George O’Malley next year, I am delighted to find out that Arizona Robbins will be back and as a season regular.

Arizona appeared sporadically in season five as a love interest for Callie Torres. She also tried to poach Doctor Bailey from general surgery to her paediatric department by telling her of the ‘joy’ involved in working with children.

In an interview with Michael Ausiello recently Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes sung high praise of Jessica Capshaw who plays Arizona saying:

“I love Jessica Capshaw and when I say love I mean love. She couldn’t be a more wonderful person, and I feel like the chemistry Arizona and Callie have feels like the Meredith and Derek chemistry to me. I find them delightful to watch.”

I wholeheartedly agree with Rhimes, I love Arizona’s quirky nature but I also adored the scene between her and Callie in last season’s finale when she revealed that she had lost a brother in the Iraq war. In that moment we saw the deeper and more sensitive side to her personality and her potential for growth as a charcter. In the event of any more of the majors leaving the show, and we know Katherine Heigl is unlikely to last more than another season, it could do no harm to invest in strong, new personalities. Look how successful the introduction of Owen Hunt to the show was in season five.
