Season eight of Grey’s Anatomy is drawing to a close and it has been confirmed that in the upcoming series finale, we are going to lose one of our much loved characters for good.
Show creator Shonda Rhimes has revealed that the loss of this fan favourite will be ‘painful’ for the cast and for viewers and told Hollywood Reporter that while she couldn’t confirm the character’s identity, she could say it was a ‘hard’ storyline to write and for the actors to perform.
Shonda insisted it would not be a minor guest star departing the series, adding:
“It’s a big death and it’s fairly shocking. It was hard, it was hard to write, it was hard to listen to at the table read.”
“As we leave our season, we will have already seen a death, and there will be some lives in jeopardy.”
Rhimes also teased that the big death may not be responsible for the only departure from the show, adding that “more than one person” may leave though both will not necessarily die.
Of course rumours have been circulating for months that some of the major show stars are considering leaving Grey’s, with most people tipping series originals Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey and Sandra Oh to go. None of the three actors, or Justin Chambers have signed a contract for a ninth run, so the death could theoretically involve any of them.
Of course, some may just move away and that route seems most likely for new baby mama Meredith Grey, who has deliberating over a move to Boston for some time.
The final episode of the eighth run is titled “Flight”, which has caused many fans to speculate that the installment will feature a plane crash. However after the big bus crash a few seasons ago, we feel that this would be a bit too predictable.
Others have asked if the big death could be that of Webber’s wife Adele, but we feel this would be too obvious and not major enough.
The season finale of Grey’s Anatomy airs in America on ABC, May 17th and in the UK on May 30th on Sky Living.
