In fact, the kids were told that it would be similar to BBC Young Musician of the Year: it was most assuredly not to be even remotely like a reality TV show – swear we wouldn’t have gone anywhere near it if it had been. The editing process cut out a load of really good speeches from teenagers who do more than hang about the streets. Even the judges’ comments were cut and spliced so that they didn’t relate to the speeches they were applied to. What you didn’t see, but genuinely was heart-warming, was a load of really diverse kids from all manner of backgrounds who supported one another and willed one another to do well. But there is no way we would go anywhere near the process again because the promise was not the reality

I almost knew that it wouldn’t match up the the classy BBC promo that has been running for weeks (the one where children mime a speech of President JF Kennedy).Showing footage of great oratory would do greater good than turning it into another hot or not type show.
