Heartbeat: Out Of Africa

Sunday 3 June 2007 8:00pm - 9:00pm on ITV1.

Lord Ashfordly’s (Rupert Vansittart) new Estate Manager, James ‘Jimbo’ Brady (Mark Umbers) is ruffling a few feathers in the village as he enforces a rent raise for Ashfordly’s tenants. The tenants are angry as they cannot afford the payments. Worst affected is Brian Rogers (John Hodgkinson), who not being able to pay the increase in rent is facing eviction. PC Rob Walker (Jonathan Kerrigan) accompanies Jimbo to Rogers’ cottage, to make sure the eviction doesn’t get out of hand. Rogers confides to Walker that he’s worried his family won’t know where he is if he moves, and angrily states that Jimbo should return to work in Africa, where they obviously treat people differently. Can Walker pacify Rogers and persuade him to leave the cottage unchallenged?

Later that day, in the Aidensfield Arms Gina (Tricia Penrose) and Carol (Lisa Kay) look over a brochure for a hotel, a potential venue for Gina and Phil’s (Mark Jordon) wedding reception. Peggy (Gwen Taylor) arrives and as Gina gets her a drink, she takes the opportunity to ask Carol’s advice about David (David Lonsdale) who has been out of sorts. Peggy discloses to Carol the details of David’s odd behaviour.

Meanwhile, The Snug is full of tenants from Ashfordly’s estate who have gathered to pay their rent to Jimbo. Over a drink the tenants, including Rogers and another disgruntled tenant, Frank Jackson (Philip Martin Brown), grumble about the rent increase. Jackson believes that slowly they will all face eviction like Rogers. Rosie (Vanessa Hehir) arrives, escorting a frail Winnie (Jean Heywood), both there to pay their rents. Rosie is worried about what the rent increase will mean for Winnie and her farm. Having collected the money, Jimbo leaves the pub and walks to his car. Shocked, he sees that someone has sabotaged his vehicle. With so many angry at Jimbo, is there only one culprit and will any witnesses step forward?

Later, Lord Ashfordly arrives at the Police Station, angry that the attack on Jimbo’s vehicle was an act of one of his tenants. He demands that Miller and his team investigate thoroughly and with some urgency. As Jimbo is a relative, his cousin’s son, Ashfordly takes offence when Miller suggests that Jimbo hasn’t quite adjusted to the difference between Aidensfield and South Africa.

Elsewhere at the garage, as Bernie (Peter Benson) tries to fix Jimbo’s car, Walker questions Rosie about what she knows about the criminal damage. Much to Rob’s annoyance she is remaining tight lipped. Meanwhile, Bellamy is getting a similar response from all the other tenants, even Gina is keeping quiet.

That evening, collecting rabbit traps which she had laid in the woods, Peggy is disturbed when she hears the sound of dogs barking and sees flashes of torch light through the trees. She quickly hides the rabbits in her coat and heads home. Back home she finds David, who has been engrossed in licking stamps and sticking them into a booklet, sitting at the table ‘supposedly’ reading a newspaper, which the stamps are now hidden beneath. After relaying her escape story, she shows an interest in what David is clearly hiding. She moves the paper and reveals David’s collection of Green Shield Stamps, could they be the explanation behind David’s recent behaviour?

The following day Walker continues with his investigation: who is behind the sabotage of Jimbo’s car? After a visit to Frank Jackson’s, Walker leaves none the wiser as to who the culprit may be. Whilst there, David drops off a visitor to the Jackson’s B&B, Mr De Villiers (Jeremy Beckman). Is there more to the stranger than meets the eye?

Elsewhere, Jimbo is visiting Winnie. She is under no illusion that, despite the pleasantries, Jimbo is only there to find out if she’ll leave her farm. After his meeting with Winnie, Jimbo returns home to find Lord Ashfordly waiting. Ashfordly is worried about what Jimbo’s actions are doing to the village, and it transpires that Jimbo’s departure from Africa was the result of some reckless behaviour. Could Jimbo’s actions have consequences for Lord Ashfordly?
