Heartbeat: Sunday 20th May
Harold Beecham’s (Richard Todd) on the warpath when his beloved dog dies from poisoning. He accuses his neighbour, Parslow (Colin Tarrant) of killing him and smashes Parslow’s van in anger. Younger (Steven Blakeley) arrives at the scene after the disturbance is reported and, when Harold refuses to cooperate with him, he arrests him and takes him back to the station.
In the Aidensfield Arms, everyone’s excited when Tristram Johnstone (Allan Corduner) a researcher for “Down Your Way” (a Radio 4 programme that visits different towns in and around England) checks into the B&B. As the news spreads about his stay in Aidensfield, everyone vies for his attention in order to get a star spot on the show! After receiving free drinks from Gina (Tricia Penrose) and Blaketon (Derek Fowlds), a free car service by Bernie (Peter Benson) and Rosie (Vanessa Hehir), and a guided tour of Aidensfield by Peggy (Gwen Taylor), Tristram has a jam-packed itinerary for his stay in the village.
Back at the station, Harold complains of a bad back so Younger gives him one of Ventress’s (William Simons) pills after being unable to find any painkillers in the first aid kit. However, the next morning Bellamy is shocked to discover that Harold is dead. What has Younger given him?
Elsewhere, Mrs Sneddon (Rita May) arrives to see Carol (Lisa Kay) with a foot injury incurred whilst gardening. However, Carol’s concerned when she asks her how she’s able to garden with her rheumatoid arthritis and is informed that the new doctor has given her medication. Unaware of a new doctor in town, Carol investigates further. Her investigations lead her to Stephen Lansbury (Ralf Little) who tells her that he’s not a qualified doctor but a herbalist. Carol expresses her concern about him undermining ‘proper’ medical treatment. Stephen explains that herbalists don’t reject medicine and are on the same side as medical professionals, but Carol’s not convinced.
Meanwhile, everyone is still competing to impress Tristram who’s hung-over after all the free drinks Gina plied him with the night before. It doesn’t help his head when an over enthusiastic Peggy drags him out on her and David’s (David Lonsdale) special tour of the village. Will all the attention and ‘Yorkshire hospitality’ thrown his way be too much for Tristan?
Back at the station, Younger is terrified when it comes to light that Harold died from poisoning and DS Dawson (Clare Wille) warns Miller the whole mess reflects very badly on his station. However, Walker remembers that Harold’s dog was poisoned and suggests they dig him up. Will the exhumation shed light on Harold’s death?
Over in the Aidensfield Arms, Carol mentions her concern about Stephen the herbalist’s treatment to Walker, who instantly suspects that he may be responsible for Harold’s poisoning. He goes up to see Stephen who admits that he was treating Harold. Walker warns Stephen that he may be in serious trouble if the post mortem reveals that his medication killed him.
Stephen is worried and goes to see Carol, who confirms his worst fears when she tells him that he gave Harold a lethal concoction. Carol tells the police her findings, and when they later go to Stephen’s house they find him semi-conscious after having drugged himself. Will they be able to save the young herbalist?
