Heroes, Chapter 14 - Distractions (Episode Guide)

This latest episode picks up in New York where an invisible Claude and Peter walk through the streets talking about their abilities. Claude theorises that Peter’s body remembers the powers he’s absorbed from others, but that his body has them all jumbled. Deciding to give Peter a crash test, he steals a woman’s handbag and tosses it to Peter before walking off. Peter suddenly becomes visible again…

Niki Sanders meets with the prison psychiatrist, who is trying to get Jessica’s personality to come through. With a metronome, she gets Niki talking about her sister playing piano. Suddenly Jessica comes forward and breaks free of her restraints…

Noah Bennett returns to Sylar in captivity where he expects Sylar to be dead. However, as he raises the white sheet, he discovers the doctor dead on the table and Sylar appear beside him. He traps Bennett in the room before stealing his wallet and discovering his address. Sylar then heads of in pursuit of Claire…

Simone turns up at Isaac’s apartment and returns his keys. Already uncomfortable, she asks him for help tracking down Peter Petrelli. Isaac warns her to stay away from Peter because he’s dangerous, but agrees to help her look for him. Before she leaves, Isaac tells her to keep the key.

Claire and Zach get her mother’s permission to leave school for the day to do research for their science project. However, they’re really going to meet Claire’s real mother. Isn’t it every girl’s fantasy, discovering you’re authentic trailer trash?

Hiro and Ando are faced with their greatest adversary yet - Hiro’s father. Hiro’s disappearance has caused him embarrassment at his company and he has tracked Hiro down in order to bring him back and prepare him for a high position in the company. Hiro argues that he ‘has a different destiny’, and is ridiculed by his father. His father then tears up Isaac’s painting, destroying their hopes of bargaining with Lindermann.

Ando has a growing fascination with Hiro’s sister, which Hiro notices when he smells cologne on him. Where Ando managed to find cologne is anyone’s guess…

Niki wakes up in the cell with the unconscious psychiatrist who is covered in taser burns. The guards enter the room with their batons drawn to restrain her…

Claude is still teaching Peter to use his powers and comes to the conclusion that Peter is too attached to the people in his life. He cites Nathan and points to a poster of him on the bus, saying “don’t you just want to punch that face every time you see it?”

Outside Claire’s mother’s trailer, Zach drives off so that Claire can’t back off, saying he’ll return for her after. She and her mother have an emotional embrace and inside they have an uncomfortable catch-up on all their lost years. Claire decides to show her mother her regeneration power, and is surprised when she smiles and shows how she can light a fire in her hand.

Before she leaves, Claire asks her mother about the identity of her father. She looks awkward, but promises to have more information for her next visit.

Meanwhile, Sylar is in the Bennett home, dressed as a Primatech employee. He convincingly poses as one of Bennett’s employees and pumps Mrs Bennett for information. She even invites him to stay for dinner.

However, Sylar oversteps the mark by being creepy about Claire and talking about her irresistible talents’. Bennett’s wife is freaked out and tries to call her husband, but Sylar knocks the phone out of her hand. She tries to run, but he uses his power to throw her against a glass cabinet. Just as he’s about to finish her off, Bennett bursts through the door and shoots Sylar, who disappears.

The Haitian shows up at the house and clears Mrs Bennett’s memory.

Isaac and Simone talk on his roof, he mentions the picture he painted of the two of them together. Simone tells him that his powers can help him change the future and that he has to find a way. As the two embrace, we see Peter and Claude watching them.

Hiro pretends to be happy to come back to Japan, but starts making crazy business plans, frightening his sister and father. When she argues, he asks her what she knows and she impresses them with honest and ambitious plans of her own. Hiro shows his father that Kimiko should succeed him in the company, and he agrees to allow Hiro to continue on his mission.

Niki is visited in prison by Lindermann’s representative who informs her that she is free to go. Apparently a death row inmate has confessed to the murders she committed and she’s free to go. She knows that since Lindermann has a hand in this, there’ll be a payback down the line.

On the rooftop, Claude taunts Peter about being a ’sad cartoon of a broken heart’. They argue about Claude’s methods, then Claude picks Petrelli up and throws him off the roof, expecting him to fly.  Instead, he crashes down on a parked taxi, impaled on a shard of metal. However, he manages to push himself off the metal and the would heals - Claire style!

He claims that instead of forgetting people as Claude suggests, he needs to remember them and how they made him feel - that this is how he connects to their powers. At the same time, he starts to display a number of powers at once and begins to lose control. Just when it looks like he’s about to explode, Claude catches him with a right hook and knocks him out.

Isaac has another canvas premonition, and discovers that Peter is in New York but not quite visible. He phones Noah Bennett about this, who says it seems “an old friend isn’t as dead as we thought he was.” So Bennett is aware of Claude?

Niki is back at home. Except it isn’t Niki - Jessica is now in control and Niki is trapped in the mirror. Jessica taunts her with a “what are you so mad about Niki? You’re the one who wanted to be locked up.”

Claire and Zach eventually return home to discover that her mother’s memory has been wiped and she has no recollection of their discussion that morning about skipping school. When her mother leaves the room, she discovers a shard of glass on a seat, evidence that something has happened in her absence.

Elsewhere, her mother makes contact with her biological father - Nathan Petrelli.
