Hollyoaks: Emmett J. Scanlan says there’s more to come for Brendan and Ste!
Emmett’s character, Brendan Brady, began a relationship with Ste (Keiron Richardson) back in 2010, whilst trying to come to terms with, and cover up, his sexuality simultaneously. The relationship was turbulent at best, with the characters embarking on one of the most ground-breaking storylines of homosexual domestic violence.
They later split up, and whilst Ste has moved on and found love with his new business partner, Doug Carter (PJ Brennan), it still remains clear that both he and Brendan still harbour feelings of love towards each other.
In a recent, exclusive interview with Unreality TV, Emmett J. Scanlan, who plays bad boy Brendan Brady, told us about their relationship:
“Ste is no longer the toy that he wants to play with, but he will always be his one love, and I don’t think that will ever change, or should.”
However, speaking to WhatsOnTV yesterday, the Irish actor revealed he believes there may be story left between Brendan and Ste:
“Stephen is Brendan’s one true love. The Ste and Doug thing, if Brendan really loved him he would let him go and pine from afar.
“It’s his punishment for all the wrong that he did because he had him in the palm of his hand and he messed it up every time. I don’t think he’ll ever let go of Stephen and I don’t think it’s the end of Stendan either.”
But, Emmett’s character has far more important things to worry about at the moment, as he is about to embark in this year’s Hollyoaks Later, which starts tonight, as the main character, and the cliff-hanger subject:
“I think the best way to understand the man is to get down to where he’s come from as a child, and Later definitely shows why Brendan has become the man that he is,” Emmett said.
“It’s a dark past, he had a very different childhood to Cheryl, even though they share a father. It explains why he may not be the father that he should be, why he can’t be the best brother that he should be and why he can’t be the lover that he should be to Stephen.”
He went on to discuss how the producers were open to suggestions he had about his chatacter:
“The writers’ room is always open,” Emmett explained, “so if you have any questions or if I wanted to pitch a certain idea there are no egos, there’s nothing except a united want to make this the best that it can be, and that’s what I absolutely love about Hollyoaks.”
Yet despite this, he wasn’t allowed to do all of his own stunts, which upset him somewhat:
Speaking to Digital Spy, Scanlan commented how he begged to be allowed to do his own stunts, in particular the one where his character is involved in an explosion:
“It was a massive, massive explosion that they did and they had one shot of it, one go to get this right.
“I begged to be able to do the stunt myself. I put a request in over and over and over again. It’s just a typical actor thing, you want to be part of everything that you do but you understand that there are professionals who do this for a living. If I get injured and there’s just one take, that kind of screws up all the filming and scheduling in afterwards.”
