After playing one of the most manipulative vixens in Hollyoaks history for the past seven years, Jennifer Metcalfe has revealed that she hasn’t been given a hard time by fans.
Fans of the hit Channel 4 soap will know that Jennifer, who is currently dating former Geordie Shore star Greg Lake, plays feisty Mercedes McQueen who could give any TV baddie a run for their money.
During her time in the village she has lied about having aids in order to trick a man into marrying her, has slept with pretty much every bloke any of her sisters has ever loved, has cheated on the father of her son with his own dad and then, in a bid to win him back, faked their sons kidnapping, stalked his cousin/girlfriend and then stabbed herself and framed the poor girl for it to get her out of the way.
Most recently she has staged her own kidnapping in a bid to teach her current victim partner a lesson for looking at another woman (as well as extorting some cash out of him in the process) which resulted in her sister having to flee the country to save her when the kidnapping got real.
However, despite all this the actress who plays her, Jennifer Metcalfe, insists that she has never got any flak from viewers over her characters behaviour.
Discussing the situation with The Mirror newspaper the actress explained:
“Some of the nasty characters in soaps get such a lot of stick from the public, but I never have.
“I’ve kind of tried to create a character that everyone loves to hate, so they see a softer side as well and I feel quite proud of that. It is great to go in and act Mercedes every day.”
Metcalfe, who had been dating Dancing On Ice star Sylvain Longchambon until he dumped her for Coronation Street star Samia Ghadie last Christmas, went on to say how, despite being filled to the brim with beautiful people, there is no pressure where looks are concerned at Hollyoaks:
“There is no pressure in Hollyoaks at all. You have got every body shape there – curvy, thin, big boobs, big bum, auburn hair – you have got everything. It’s the full mix.
“I have put on half a stone since Christmas and for how much fun I have had in those five months, it has been worth every pound.
“There isn’t anything defining sexy, as long as you feel comfortable in your own skin you are sexy in your own right.”
Hollyoaks recently announced that Jennifer had signed a new contract which will see her stay with the show for the next year at least.
Hollyoaks can be seen week nights at 6.30pm on Channel 4 / Channel 4 HD – watch a clip of Jen in action below:
