Hollyoaks actress, Jennifer Metcalfe, has revealed that she has no sympathy what-so-ever for her character, Mercedes McQueen!

Fans of the hit Channel 4 soap will know how Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe) is currently standing trial for two counts of perverting the course of justice, and with the help of a dodgy barrister, may just get away with both of them!

Mercedes, engulfed with jealousy over the relationship between her ex-fiancé, Riley Costello (Rob Norbury) and his second cousin, Mitzeee Minniver (Rachel Shenton) began a terrifying campaign of terror, stalking Mitzeee to the brink of insanity, and then stabbing herself in the stomach, framing her love rival for attempted murder.

Mitzeee was sent to prison, awaiting trial, and whilst she was safely out of the picture, Mercedes made her move on Riley. With the help of murderer, Dr Browning (Joe Thompson), Mercedes managed to win Riley back, and they looked set to live happily ever after, with their baby son, Bobby. Riley even proposed and accepted a new football contract which would see the small family jet off to a new life in Dubai, but when Mercedes found out that when Mitzeee escaped from prison she shared a night of passion with Riley, the second plan for perverting the course of justice formed in the vixen’s twisted mind.

Enlisting the help of adopted niece, Phoebe (Mandip Gill), Mercedes hid Bobby in a secret location and staged a kidnapping. With Mitzeee still on the run from prison, she was the obvious suspect, and Riley even began believing that the love of his life, his kissing cousin, Mitzeee, was responsible for the tot’s abduction. However, when Phoebe, who had been looking after the tot, believing that Mercedes was just stopping Riley from having access, ventured out of the hideout to fetch supplies and realised what Mercedes had done when she saw the papers, went to her foster mum, Jacqui (Claire Cooper) and blew the whistle.

When Mercedes evil plot was uncovered, Riley declared he wanted nothing more to do with her, then promptly got shot dead by a stray bullet during the violent showdown between Brendan (Emmett J. Scanlan) and Walker (Neil Newbon), leaving both women devastated.

Mitzeee was finally released from prison, and Mercedes suffered a complete mental breakdown and ended up in the prisons secure psychiatric unit.

Now the trial is upon them and with the help of Myra’s (Nicole Barber-Lane) corrupt brief, Mercedes is set to be let off the hook as the defence claims that Riley was abusing her and constructed every event in an attempt to get publicity.

This has left the McQueen family torn, with half of them wanting Mercedes back in the bosom of the McQueen family, whilst Jacqui, Phoebe and even Mercedes herself believing that she should be made responsible for her actions, and it seems that Jennifer Metcalfe, who plays Mercedes, agrees with her alter-ego.

Speaking to E4.com, Metcalfe has said that, despite her character falling completely apart over the death of Riley, she believes that no sympathy should be sent her way:

“I think my character’s never had a happy ending because she can’t. I don’t think with Mercedes there ever is a happy ending. Just when something might go her way or something’s going to go right for her, she destroys it – and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It makes great drama.

“I don’t think Mercedes will ever change, and I don’t think I really want her to. I love playing her the way she is – fun, feisty, depressed, up, down, left, right! You don’t know where she’s going to go next, and I love her that way.”

She continued: “I have no sympathy whatsoever for my character Mercedes. When people [said] on Twitter, ‘Oh poor Mercedes, Riley should get back with her’, [I thought], ‘No, she’s horrible’.

“I love her that way and again I wouldn’t change her for the world, but I have no sympathy for that girl whatsoever. She gets everything that’s coming to her.”

The actress then went on to say how, despite this huge wake up call, her character doesn’t even regret her actions, adding:

“I don’t think Mercedes has any regrets whatsoever. I think she does what she does at the time for a reason, and she’ll deal with the consequences later, whatever they may be!”
