They couldn’t be more different on screens, but it would seem that off screen they have a common cause, and equally sized hearts of gold!
Hollyoaks stars Joseph Thompson (Dr Browning) and Nick Pickard (Tony Hutchinson) have raised more than £2,000 for charity after taking part in this year’s London Marathon together.
Thompson, who has just won the British Soap Award for best newcomer, and Pickard, who is the shows only original cast member, ran the 26 miles in order to raise funds for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, and have now presented the charity with a cheque for £2,140.
Thompson, whose character is the murderous Doctor at the soaps local Tee Valley hospital, commented on their choice of charity:
“I’m proud to have been a member of their Virgin London Marathon team and to raise money for such a worthy cause.”
Whilst Pickard, whose character Tony Hutchinson is currently battling cancer, added:
“Reaching the finishing line wasn’t easy, but knowing I was raising money for the charity and helping to support lung cancer patients and their families definitely kept me running.”
Hollyoaks also announced this week that their main storyline for this year’s Hollyoaks Later will focus on Pickard’s character, Tony’s dealing with his diagnosis as he engages on a mission of self-discovery with old friends James Redmond (Rory ‘Finn’ Finnigan), Jeremy Edwards (Kurt Benson) and John Pickard (Dom Reilly) in what show bosses have described as being a bit like the epic film, The Hangover.
Lee Mason, Channel 4’s editor for drama commissioning, explained their choice of storyline: “We’re thrilled to be bringing back Hollyoaks Later for a sixth series and with it some of our best loved Hollyoaks faces.
“Tony’s cancer battle is an important story for us to tell and we’re so excited to be able to explore it further within the high octane, highly emotional and sometimes shocking world of Hollyoaks Later.”
