It is the news that all Hollyoaks fans have been dreading ever since he first appeared on our Channel 4 screens two and a half years ago, Emmett J. Scanlan has quit his role as Brendan Brady!
Emmett first appeared on screen as the double hard, double B moustached monster that is Brendan Brady the deep and dark Irish nightclub owner back in August 2010.
Since then fans of the award-winning Lime Pictures soap have seen Emmett bring to life and develop one of the most complex villains in TV history whilst his character embarked on some of the most dangerous and controversial storylines the show had ever seen.
Arguably the most notable was the revelation that Brendan, despite having had a wife and kids, was gay but whilst trying to come to terms with his sexuality turned against the love of his life, Ste Hay (Kieron Richardson) in a disturbing display of domestic violence.
Brendan has also been at the centre of the murders of Danny Houston, Joel’s stepfather, Mick and Brendan’s own grandmother, but despite his terrifying persona, and catalogue of previous crimes, Brendan has become one of the most popular and best loved soap characters of all time.
This is due to a combination of excellent writing at Hollyoaks as well as phenomenal acting from Emmett, earning him more awards and nominations than you can shake a stick at including “Villain of the Year” and “Best Newcomer” at the 2011 Inside Soap Awards, and “Best Actor” and “Best Bad Boy” at the 2012 Inside Soap Awards.
Before starring in Hollyoaks, Emmett appeared in the Justin Timberlake-produced MTV series The Phone, as “The Operator”, as well as featuring in RTÉ Two’s fly on-the-wall documentary series, Hollywood Trials.
Scanlan’s other roles include the films Colour from the Dark, Studs and Freakdog, and the title role in Charlie Casanova where he won the 2011 European Independent Film Festival award for Best Actor.
However, as Emmett confirmed to Unreality TV this morning, he has now decided to bow out of the hugely popular soap, Hollyoaks, commenting:
“To the greatest fans I could ever wish for. The time has come for me to sign out of #Hollyoaks to bow out as Double B aka Brendan motherf***ing Brady.
“It has been the greatest honour to share the stage with you & I could think of no better company to spend my evenings with.
“Thank you for your love and loyalty, and please, let’s dance again another time, another role… To the channel and Lime pictures thank you. A success built on surrounding myself with people who are better than me in every department, thank you.”
Emmett, whose final scenes will be shown in March this year, had hinted to us when we met him last year ahead of the amazing autumn series of Hollyoaks Later that the end may have been in sight for Brendan Brady, and today he told us his reasons for leaving the show he loves so dearly:
“I didn’t want to fall into old patterns.
“There is a fear that by staying to long you end up repeating storylines. It’s very hard to maintain the high stakes and constant twists and turns for Brendan Brady but I think production have done that brilliantly.
“It wouldn’t be fair on me or the fans to take the foot off the pedal… This was the evolutionary next step. And I hope they like it… I’m gonna miss this place sorely”
Little is known at this point of how Brendan will depart from the show but given the character’s history we are sure to expect a pretty dramatic exit and considering that Brendan is currently in the middle of a storyline involving his father who, as was revealed in last year’s Hollyoaks Later, abused Brendan as a child and who Brendan has already tried to have killed once, it is bound to be explosive!

Hollyoaks can be seen weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4/ Channel 4 HD
We would like to wish Emmett all the luck of the Irish and , whilst we can’t wait to see how much of a bang Brendan goes out with, we will miss him terribly!
