Whilst the rest of the residents of Hollyoaks prepare for the biggest tragedy the village has ever seen, there is one person who, for once, has been tucked nicely away from the drama, Mercedes McQueen!
But that may set to change as Jennifer Metcalfe, who plays the scheming vixen, has admitted that the end of the road is not quite in sight for her character and Dr Browning!
Fans of the award-winning Channel 4 soap will know how Mercedes is currently in a secured psychiatric unit following a meltdown after her fiancée, Riley Costello (Rob Norbury) was accidentally shot and killed by a stray bullet in the dramatic showdown between Brendan Brady (Emmett J Scanlan) and Walker (Neil Newbon) last month.
Mercedes had been behind bars after her evil plan to frame Mitzeee Minniver (Rachel Shenton) for her attempted murder with an injury she inflicted upon herself, was unveiled, along with her fake kidnapping of her son, Bobby.
By this time the cogs in Mercedes had already started to unwind, and, after months of plotting to get him back, was devastated when Riley was killed, sending her dramatically over the edge.
However, in one twist of her plan to get her man back, Mercedes had enlisted the help of Paul Browning (Joe Thompson) who was, unbeknown to her, as unhinged as she was, and as obsessed with her as she was with Riley.
In his efforts to win over Mercedes, Dr Browning had gone to the extreme length of murdering Lynsey Nolan when she threatened to expose Mercedes for stabbing herself, and is now safely rotting behind bars for his crime… Or so we thought!
Whilst originally using Dr Browning, Mercedes did show some deep affection for him when she agreed to go on the run with him, once it had been discovered that he was the murderer, and even told him that she loved him as he was being carted off by police.
She soon forgot about him, however, as her plan to get Riley back intensified, but according to Jennifer Metcalfe, who plays her, the connection between them is still very strong, and with Joe Thompson returning next year to reprise his role as Dr Evil, she thinks there could be some exciting times for the couple, who she describes as soul mates!
Speaking to Inside Soap magazine, Metcalfe explained: “For three years the scriptwriters tried to tell me Malachy Fisher was Mercedes’s soul mate, and then they tried to tell me that Riley was. But I told them no, it’s got to be Doctor Browning.
“He gives as good as he gets and I think that’s really good for my character, especially when Mercedes has been involved with so many men in the village.”
When asked if she thought that Mercedes could change and redeem herself, Metcalfe commented coyly: “I’m not sure if I can give too much away. All I can say is there’s a really big storyline coming up – and I think the audience will be shocked by it.”
