We reported a few weeks ago how Dr Browning was going to make a return to Hollyoaks and rekindle his relationship with a released Mercedes McQueen in Hollyoaks, and for those who wondered just how these two people would be free to do this, here is how!
Fans of the hit Channel 4 soap will know how Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe) is currently in a secured psychiatric unit following her fake abduction of her baby Bobby, and the revelation that she framed Mitzeee for attempted murder, whilst Dr Browning (Joe Thompson) is currently locked up for the murder of Lynsey Nolan.
But things are set to change dramatically for the incarcerated pair when Mercedes dodgy solicitor decides the best way to get the mad McQueen free is to blame everything on her dead fiancée, Riley Costello (Rob Norbury), as he isn’t around to prove her claims false.
In the court room scenes, due to air next month, viewers will watch as Mercedes mercilessly blames Riley for all her behaviour, and even claims that he was an abusive partner and that it was him who stabbed her, not herself!
Jennifer Metcalfe, who plays Mercedes, told All About Soap: “That stuff was great to film – the writers came up with some brilliant material. The drama queen is back! It was challenging as well – she completely breaks down and says how bad Riley was. From the audience’s point of view, it’s really going to be quite shocking.”
Asked whether Mercedes feels guilty, the actress replied: “Yes. She does feel guilty about it, but only as guilty as Mercedes can ever feel. So she gets over it very quickly!”
And Mercedes isn’t the only one to use Riley as a get out of jail free card, as when Dr Browning is called as a witness he jumps on the bad wagon too. Always one to know a good deal when he sees one, Browning uses a false suggestion to make the jury believe that it was Riley who was responsible for Lynsey’s death too!
Fans of the show will know how after months of us guessing who murdered Lynsey, it was revealed that Dr Browning killed the nurse in order to keep her silent after she discovered that Mercy had stabbed herself to frame Mitzeee (Rachel Shenton).
He and Mercedes then became a couple, at first to help Mercedes get Riley back, but ended up falling for each other in the end, with Mercedes even agreeing to make a run for it with him after he kidnapped her hen she discovered that he was in fact a murderer!
On how Mercedes feels about seeing Browning again, Metcalfe continued: “It’s a total surprise. I don’t think she knows how she’ll react until she actually sees him, and when she does they’re back in that moment when he was dragged away from her. She really did fall for him hook, line and sinker.”
