After only a little over a year since joining the cast of Hollyoaks, Gillian Taylforth has decided to quit!
Taylforth, who also played Kathy Beale in BBC rival soap EastEnders on and off from 1985 till 2000, is to set to leave her role as Roscoe Matriarch Sandy this summer, in a non-fatal exit storyline which will allow her to return to the show should she want to in the future.
Digital Spy broke the news of this, along with a statement released by Taylforth which read:
“I have loved the role of Sandy Roscoe playing mum to six gorgeous boys, all of whom I will miss desperately, but the time is right for me to spend more time with my own family.
“It has been enormous fun and hugely rewarding to be part of settling in a new Hollyoaks family and it fills me with pride that they have so quickly been taken to viewers’ hearts.
“I am really happy that I will still be able to pop back to check on the Roscoe boys but it’s now time for them to fend for themselves!”
Since joining Hollyoaks at the beginning of last year Sandy has been involved in some of the show’s most hard-hitting storylines including the revelation that she was the biological mother of Darren Osborne (Ashley Taylor-Dawson).
Her character is currently married to local gangster, Fraser Black (Jesse Birdsall) who, unbeknown to her, has her eldest son hidden away in a hospital having nearly died after being held captive in the derelict council flats whilst they were being demolished earlier this year.
Sandy’s on-screen sons Darren, Joe (Ayden Callaghan), Freddie (Charlie Clapham), Ziggy (Fabrizio Santino), Robbie (Charlie Wernham) and Jason (Alfie Sykes-Browne) are all expected to remain on the soap, with producers hopeful that Taylforth will make a return at some point too.
Hollyoaks can be seen weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4 / Channel 4 HD – Watch Taylforth’s on-screen twin boys, Robbie and Jason, in a backstage challenge in the clip below:
