Things take an unexpected twist in the current Hollyoaks domestic violence storyline as Maxine Minniver finally makes a stand against her abusive partner, Patrick Blake, in tonight’s episode.
Fans of the award-winning Channel 4 soap will know that Patrick (Jeremy Sheffield) has gone from controller to abuser in his relationship with Maxine (Nikki Sanderson) in recent weeks, turning the once bubbly and social events organiser into a whimpering and cowering wreck.
First of all he started by constantly putting her down and berating in her in public over her alleged inappropriate behaviour, all the while manipulating every situation by making her feel it was her fault.
Then, a few weeks ago, he upped the ante by striking her hard across the face, but in last night’s episode it seems that he has pushed her too far.
Fans watched in horror last night as, after slamming her for wearing a sexy elf outfit – despite having told her in public he thought she looked nice, a very scared Maxine went about organising a romantic evening in to make up with Patrick, complete with piping hot Indian takeaway.
Patrick was in no mood to forgive, however, and instead tipped the contents of the dinner into Maxine’s lap, causing her nasty burns and blisters.
In tonight’s episode we will see a feisty Maxine going out of her way not to talk to her abusive partner, which drives him to distraction.
Then, after hearing that Maxine has gone to hospital – where she has taken Dennis after a fall, Patrick storms over to the waiting room believing she has gone to have her burns looked at and report his abuse.
The situation results in Maxine standing up for herself once and for all, telling him in no uncertain terms that she did not appreciate his way of showing her that he loves her, and to stop it and change before he loses her for good.
Patrick actually seems to take note of this and, with a little help from Dennis, arranges a Christmas display outside the grotto to spell out ‘I love you Maxine’ where he drops to one knee and produces a diamond ring so big you can still see parts of the Titanic embed in it, in front of a crowd of well-wishers.
However, Patrick does not get the response he hopes for as Maxine, looking more than a little shell-shocked, tells him she can’t marry him before running off, leaving him with that look in his eye which leaves us in no doubt as to how this will end.
