Horizon – Prof Regan’s Supermarket Secrets
Last year, Professor Lesley Regan caused waves across the beauty industry with her BBC Horizon exposé. Now she returns to scour supermarket shelves and reveal the truths behind the labels.
Can “superfoods” prevent cancer? What does pro-biotic mean? Is organic really healthier? Every year, millions of pounds are spent by consumers because impressive claims appear to be backed-up by science. But which products have the evidence to back up their claims?
From pro-biotics and organic food to anti-bacterial sprays, washing powders and superfoods, Horizon cuts through the complex science and the confusing marketing speak to answer one simple question: “Should I buy this, or not?”
Professor Regan is one of the UK’s top obstetricians and gynaecologists at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, and a rigorous scientist. But she’s also a normal consumer. By confronting the manufacturers, testing their claims and speaking to experts, Professor Regan scrutinises the products on supermarkets’ shelves today.
On her journey, she meets former F1 world champion-turned-organic farmer, Jody Scheckter, to find out if organic food really is better for us and the environment.
She also discovers some startling results after meeting scientists conducting a trial at Imperial College, London, into the effects of pro-biotics on the body.
Finally, Professor Regan looks at the claims made by manufacturers using “superfoods” and heads off to a leading smoothie maker to ask them the question: “Where’s the evidence?”
