It has today been revealed that Cristin Milioti, who was unveiled as the mom in the season 8 finale of How I Met Your Mother last week, will take on the title of series regular when the show returns for its final season later this year.
The news marks the first time that How I Met Your Mother has expanded its series regular group beyond Josh Radnor, Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, Cobie Smulders and Jason Segal.
It has also been confirmed that the whole of the final season will focus on one long epic weekend – the longest wedding weekend, ever! CBS confirmed to TVLine a few days back that the entire run of season 9 will focus on just the wedding weekend.
The show will deal with “how each character, before Ted, meets the mother. So they each meet her independently before he does”.
Carter Bays, HIMYM co-creator stated that fans will become more acquainted with Milioti’s character over the course of the final season, when the show returns in the fall.
Speaking about Milioti, he added: “Carter Bays, series co-creator added about the casting of Milioti: “It was exciting. Part of what helped us is our casting director Marisa [Ross], she sort of has been talking about Cristin for two years now. It helped that she turned us onto her and then the more we got to know Cristin and see her work, the more we released ‘Yeah, she’s the right choice’. So that definitely helped, because we didn’t want to do a big casting cattle call – we were going to make it ‘come audition for Barney’s cousin’ or something”.
The big unveiling of the mother came after Ted announced he’d finished renovating his house and that he plans to sell up and move to Chicago. The day after Robin and Barney’s wedding, he planned to get a train back to the city and leave his old life behind.
Just as he is getting ready to give up on the city, the ‘mother’ is seen buying a train ticket to Farhampton.
