How I Met Your Mother spoilers: Cristin Milioti unveiled as… the mother!

The mother of How I Met Your Mother was unveiled during last night’s season finale.

Craig Thomas, co-creator of the series said that fans of the show most likely gave up on the idea of meeting the mysterious “mother”, adding that it most likely came “as a genuine surprise for a lot of people”.

The eagle-eyed among us will have noticed that Cristin Milioti has been cast as the mother, identifiable by the trademark yellow umbrella.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Thomas said: “The thing we’re proud about in this series, we were able to pack some real surprises into the conventional sitcom form.

“A lot of viewers have given up on meeting the mother prior to the final episode. There are a lot of people who think that’s true. I think this will count as a genune surprise for a lot of people.”

Speaking about Milioti, he added: “She’s a fantastic actress. It seems so much more interesting and so much more Ted to find someone special and unique and new – someone that we haven’t seen before.”

Carter Bays, series co-creator added about the casting of Milioti: “It was exciting. Part of what helped us is our casting director Marisa [Ross], she sort of has been talking about Cristin for two years now. It helped that she turned us onto her and then the more we got to know Cristin and see her work, the more we released ‘Yeah, she’s the right choice’. So that definitely helped, because we didn’t want to do a big casting cattle call – we were going to make it ‘come audition for Barney’s cousin’ or something”.

The big unveiling of the mother came after Ted announced he’d finished renovating his house and that he plans to sell up and move to Chicago. The day after Robin and Barney’s wedding, he planned to get a train back to the city and leave his old life behind.

Just as he is getting ready to give up on the city, the ‘mother’ is seen buying a train ticket to Farhampton…

How I Met Your Mother returns for its ninth, and final season later this year.
