Is Horne And Corden Really That Bad?

I have read some very damning reviews of BBC Three’s new sketch show Horne and Corden. Rosie Christie over on Unreality Shout wanted to like it, but found herself bitterly disappointed with the latest offering from the Gavin and Stacey creators. Benji Wilson at The Telegraph found it “about as funny as credit default swaps.”

I have admittedly missed both episodes of the series so far, but have been watching the odd Youtube clip on BBC’s dedicated channel. I wouldn’t say the boy’s sketches are comedy gold, but the ones I have seen have certainly been at least mildly amusing. The American piss take (embedded above) definitely made me laugh, though after the first two minutes I did get a bit bored.

I know that BBC may be picking out its best bits for Youtube and maybe the clips aren’t a fair representation of what the show is actually like. But I would love to hear from some of you who have actually seen the show and gauge whether you think that Horne And Corden is really all that bad? As always you can leave your comments below or jump on over to our forum and join the debate.

I watched the first one. It may play to bad stereotypes but I did love the character Matthew Horne plays for the “hard-hitting” journalist. I don’t think he’s taking the pi** out of gay people as such, just more the way people in general act to (and in) news journalism these days.

I found it quite funny, but I can see why there is such a backlash being aimed at James Corden. I think it’s true that he is in danger of becoming a “monster” and therefore alienating his intended audience. Certainly of the two, I find Matt the funnier and more talented.

Having said that, it’s James that co-writes Gavin and Stacey with Ruth Jones, so he certainly has comedy talent, I just think he needs to tone it down on his own sketch show.

I have watched the first 3 – hoping it would get better, but I’m afraid it got WORSE! There was a dreadful “joke” about an electric wheelchair for a disabled girl – it turned out to be an electric execution-type chair. Ha Ha ?? I don’t think so?
