New Time Lord companion Jenna-Louise Coleman has spoken out about her relief now it’s been officially announced that she’s joining Doctor Who in the iconic role of sidekick.
Speaking to the Sun’s TV Biz, Jenna said, “I am so relieved it is out.
“My flatmates had no idea and it has kind of opened this whole web of lies.
“I have realised that I am actually quite a good liar, which is terrifying actually.”
Karen Gillan, who of course currently plays the Doctor’s assistant Amy Pond, is due to leave our screens during the fifth episode of the new series, which airs in the autumn.
However, we won’t get to see Jenna – who formerly played lesbian teen Jasmine Thomas in Emmerdale – until the Christmas special of the show.
And the show’s writer, Steven Moffat, has so far refused to reveal what the character’s name will be…
He said, “Who she’s playing, how the Doctor meets her and even where he finds her are all part of one of the biggest mysteries the Time Lord has ever encountered.
“Even by the Doctor’s standards, this isn’t your usual boy meet girl.”
And of how Amy Pond’s exit would play out, he said, “It will be a final encounter with the angels and not everybody gets out alive — and I really mean it this time.”
Finally, who’s also starring in Julian Fellowes’ mini-series Titanic, revealed that she found out she’d landed the role while she was out food shopping.
She said, “I was debating what goes best in a salmon salad and I got a call from my agent.
“I thought, ‘I can’t carry on shopping now.’ So I put down my basket and left.
“I couldn’t tell anyone so I went for a bit of a walk and tried to digest it. It’s all been quite surreal.”
