Jennifer Lopez calls Ben Affleck her “first big heartbreak”

Despite being married twice before they split in 2004, Jennifer Lopez is calling her failed romance with ‘Gone Girl’ actor Ben Affleck her “first big heartbreak.”

The surprising admission came during an interview with Maria Shriver, who knows a little about marital trouble herself, for NBC’s ‘The Today Show’, where Lopez was appearing to promote her new memoir, ‘True Love.’

After Shriver noted how quickly she moved on from Affleck (they broke off their engagement in January 2004, and by June, she was already married to Latin superstar Marc Anthony) Lopez was quick to defend the whirlwind nuptials.

“To have one of my best friends who I’d known for years, who I actually love and did have chemistry with, come into my life and say, ‘I’m here’…” she said, pausing to add “What you need to know is, nobody can save you or heal you. Only you can do that for you.” Lopez and Anthony were married for 10 years, but officially divorced earlier this year. Together, they have twins Max and Emmy.

The ‘Maid In Manhattan’ star went on to liken relationships to the attention children strive for, she admitted that she “overachieved,” to try and fill the void of love as a child. “I was the one who ran track and I won medals every weekend,” she said, adding, “that would give me confidence. But there was a part of me that just wanted love, that felt like she wasn’t worthy of the love.”

Speaking about her love-life now, the star, who is currently single, admitted that love is “still a work in progress” for her, but she certainly hasn’t shut the door on love. “I’m open to [it]” she told Shriver, “but right now, I think it’s better to just be on my own for a minute and learn more about myself.”

The full revealing interview is set to air on both Tuesday the 3rd and Wednesday the 4th of November on NBC’s ‘The Today Show.’

Lopez will also be sitting behind the judging panel again for the brand new season of ‘American Idol’ airing in January 2015 on FOX.
