Joanna Lumley: Land Of The Northern Lights
Joanna Lumley attempts to realise her life’s ambition in a one-off special film for BBC One.
Travelling north across the Arctic Circle up through Norway and finally to Svalbard, Joanna takes viewers on a very personal journey as she hopes to see the spell-binding Northern Lights in Joanna Lumley: Land Of The Northern Lights (working title).
Joanna grew up in tropical Malaysia, yet dreamed of the winter wonderland she read about in books.
She says: “I had never seen snow and never felt cold. In the Far East, cold was a luxury and snow was only in pictures in fairy stories.”
On this epic voyage Joanna uncovers the nature, history and culture of the region whilst taking in the rugged beauty of her surroundings.
Box of crayons in hand, Joanna’s journey takes her from dog sled to snowmobile as she finds out about the region’s rich and surprising folklore of snow-queens, trolls and Vikings and spends time with reindeer herdsmen from Europe’s last indigenous people, the Sami.
Alison Kirkham, BBC Executive Producer, says: “It has been a privilege for the BBC to share with Joanna what is a very special voyage to the North.
“It has been a personal goal of hers to experience the Northern Lights and Joanna’s immense enthusiasm for the project shines throughout the documentary.”

We so enjoyed seeing Joanna Lumley presenting Northern Lights, we hope that we are going to see a lot more of her in this capacity – she was so good.
Loved the show! We should like to do something similar. There are a number of companies who organise stuff but it’s a case of finding the right one. Which did the programme use? And any tips?
Many thanks.

Hi, Can i pay with another method? i.e. credit card.
Thanks
I have always wanted to see the Northern Lights, and as a surprise for my 30th birthday, my partner booked a 4 day cruise with Hurtigruten which was to go from Tromso to Kirkenes and back. We went on the 31st Jan 09 and I can honestly say it’s one of the best experiences of my life! We saw the Aurora Borealis on our last night, which, having investigated the science involved, we were very fortunate, and it was completely breathtaking, something I will never ever forget! We also visited the Igloo Hotel at Alta in an unscheduled stop when the weather took a turn for the worst – it was absolutely amazing, and I fully recommend a visit. I didn’t see Joanna’s documentary until we returned and thought she and her crew did a fantastic job of conveying the enormity of it all (emotional and visual). I will certainly be looking to purchase a copy of it and cannot believe that there are no plans to put it on general release.
Many thanks
