John Hurt to star in FX’s new high profile del Toro pilot, The Strain
The pilot is based on the best-selling vampire novel trilogy by del Toro and Chuck Hogan and will go into production in September 2013.
Hurt will play the character of of Professor Abraham Setakian who is described as a holocaust survivor who immigrated to the states after the Second World War. He now owns and runs his own pawn shop in Spanish Harlem. A mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism spreads, and he may be the only one with the answers.
Other cast announced for the pilot so far include Corey Stoll, Kevin Durand and Mia Maestro.
Stoll stars as Dr. Ephriam Goodweather who is the head of the Center of Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. As the outbreak and plague take over the city, Ephraim, Abraham and the crew of everyday New Yorkers form a “ragtag resistance”.
Durand is set to star as Vasily Det, an exterminator turned eager vampire slayer whilst Maestro will play Dr. Nora Martinez. Both of which are part of the main crew with Professor Abraham and Dr. Ephraim.
Speaking about the casting, de Toro, who will direct and co-write the pilot said: “I am incredibly happy to be reunited with John, who is one of the greatest actors in the world and one of my favourite people ever.
“Chuck and I always visualized him while writing The Strain novels and he is absolutely perfect for the part!”
John Hurt’s credits include Doctor Who and more movies than we’ve had hot dinners – including Harry Potter, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and V for Vendetta.
