To celebrate Diwali, BBC One presents an intimate documentary following two Geordie families through the highs and lows of pregnancy and childbirth, revealing the unique Hindu approach to having a baby.
Anu and Sandeep share their home with Sandeep’s mum and are expecting their first child in six weeks. For a Hindu family, eight years of marriage is a long time to wait for a baby. DJ Sandeep is ecstatic at becoming a dad, convinced that the baby was a Bollywood star in a previous life.
Under pressure to follow Hindu protocol, the family consult their local priest to give them a letter to name the child. They have a clear idea of what they want, but their priest doesn’t agree. It’s written in the stars that the baby’s name should begin with “D”. That could mean Donald or David, which, to Anu, would mean disaster.
Nandish and Daksha, meanwhile, had never left India before taking their first flight to a new life in the UK to train as GPs, and, two years ago, made Newcastle their home. They are expecting their second baby in a few months, but have only just been reunited with their first child, Disha, after their difficult decision to leave her in India with her grandparents at just four months old. Will Disha’s second birthday blessing make up for missing her first birthday? And how will Daksha cope with the birth being so far from home, in the absence of the family she misses so dearly?
