Katy Perry has gone straight to the top of the Official Singles Chart this week with her new single ‘Roar’ giving the star her fourth UK Number (1).
In becoming Number (1) this week Katy Perry now has the UK’s third fastest selling single of the year so far and it gives her the biggest first week sale in the UK since she shot to fame.
‘Roar’, according to information released by the Official Charts Company has sold 179,500 copies since it went on sale in the UK last Sunday (1st of September).
This beats her previous best when California Gurls featuring Snoop Dogg sold 123,600 copies back in its first week of release in 2010.
‘Roar’ is now the third fastest selling single in the UK sitting behind ‘Wake Me Up’ by Avicii and ‘Blurred Lines’ by Robin Thicke featuring TI and Pharrell Williams.

“The UK is one of the most important groups of people in the world for me because I feel like the UK is so ahead of the zeitgeist… They are the zeitgeist! I love going over there, and I’m going to be going over several times this year.
“The UK is where a lot of music trends start,” said Katy. “It’s where some of the coolest music comes out of, music that’s influenced me; I’m listening to AlunaGeorge at the moment, and all that great stuff that you guys have been listening to for the last eight months, by the way!”
Elsewhere in the Top 5 this week Ellie Goulding moves to Number (2) this week after three weeks at the top with ‘Burn’ which racked up an impressive 311,000 sales since being released.
‘Wake Me Up’ by Avicii moves to Number (3) while Klangkarussell’s ‘Sonnentanz (Sun Don’t Shine)’ FT Will Heard moves to Number (4)
Finally, the Cedric Gervais remix of Lana Del Rey’s Summertime Sadness completes the Top 5 this week.
Looking elsewhere in the Official Singles Chart at new entries this week there are three new entries in the Official Singles Chart Top 40.
Scoring their highest charting single in their career this week are You Me At Six with ‘Lived A Lie’ from their fourth album ‘Cavalier Youth’ which has reached Number (11) this week in the Official Singles Chart.
The UK’s latest girl group Neon Jungle (above) have also debuted this week in the Official Singles Chart with their debut single ‘Trouble’ which enters the chart this week at Number (12).
Finally London Grammar have scored their second Top 40 hit this week with ‘Strong’ which enters the chart at Number (17).
